Volleyball: Basha vs Desert Vista

Here is a quick spin around the fall sports scene after a big weekend of competition for area teams.

Girls volleyball

Desert Vista beat Hamilton in the finals of the Westwood Tournament of Champions.

The Thunder went 9-0 in the tournament with a 22-25, 25-11 and 17-15.

Desert Vista was down 7-2 in the third set before the furious comeback for the win.

“I like what I've seen so far from this team, especially their resilience,” Thunder coach Molly West said. “We've put ourselves behind in some matches, but have been able to show some grit and come back. That happened in this one. We're developing good chemistry."

The all-tournament team consisted of Hamilton’s Preslie Anderson, libero Hailey Babcock, Olivia Hallaran and Darian Clark, Desert Vista's Olivia Fairchild, Kendall Glover and Sydney Mathison, Gilbert’s Alexa Rockas and Kaitlyn Lines; Sunnyslope’s Katie Oleksak and Perry’s Kennedy Kaminski.

Boys golf

The Aguila Invitational was held in Laveen had a great finish to the individual championship.

Michael Feagles of Brophy won it after a three-hole playoff with Mountain Pointe’s Ryan Rybicki.

The Pride senior made a late charge, shooting a 8-under 64 on the final day to finish at 7-under overall for the two-day tournament.

Brophy won the even by 10 strokes at 13-under with Chaparral second at 30under, while the best area team was Perry, which finished fifth at 17-over par.

Red Mountain, which finished seventh, was the only other area team to make the top 10 in the 30-team field.

Cross country

Several area teams traveled to California for the annual Woodbridge Classic.

The Desert Vista girls finished third with 135 points behind Great Oak (59) and Sunset Apollos (85).

The Thunder’s top finisher was junior Baylee Jones, who came in fifth at 16.56.9 while Haley Wolf and Amanda Davis finished in the top 20.

The Desert Vista boys, running without Xavier Esparza, finished eighth overall on the boys side with DJ Harris finishing 14th at 14:51.8 with his best career time.

The Perry boys finished 23 with senior Cade Burks leading the way with a 29th place finish in 15:02.06.

Locally the Chandler girls, who had five in the top nine including runner-up Alexis Nichols, and Corona del Sol boys, led by second place finisher Slade Sumner, won the Ojo Rojo Invite at Tumbleweed Park.

Swimming

The top team at the Chandler Wolves Invite was Desert Vista as the girls team won the title and the boys teams finished second.

The Thunder girls finished with 383 points with Pinnacle second at 259.

The next highest area team was Chandler at seventh while Mountain View was ninth and Basha 10th in the 30-team field.

On the boys side, Brophy won it with 360 points and the Thunder were second with 168.

Mountain View (165) was third, Chandler (152) was fifth, Gilbert (134) was sixth, Corona del Sol was seventh (127)  and Mesquite was (120) was eighth.
