Skyline's Aaron Wood and Mason Crawford celebrate the game's first touchdown.

These rankings in the 6A Conference remind us of that whack-a-mole game at arcades and carnivals.

One team pops up to look like a contender and ‘Wham’ it is smacked back down into the bottom of the rankings. Or out completely.

Desert Ridge probably should have never fallen out of the top 10 after losing the opener, but Jaguars coach Jeremy Hathcock admitted the team wasn’t very good at that point.

“Right now we’re have a lot of work to do,” he said after the Norco said. “We will be OK by week three or four.”

Try Week 3.

The Jaguars dropped then-No. 3 Hamilton last week 36-20. The Huskies are clearly down after barely beating Red Mountain the week before, but still an impressive win.

Desert Ridge started out No. 4 then dropped out of the top 10 and now the Jags are back at No. 5.

Then there is Chandler.

The Wolves stay at No. 2 in the East Valley but dropped one spot to third in 6A rankings despite getting hammered by Mountain Pointe, 52-7, on Thursday. All can admit these two teams can play the next seven weeks and the outcome would never be anywhere near that again.

Chandler looked to be dead on its feet after playing three games in 12 days. A bit of an excuse that Wolves coach Shaun Aguano wouldn’t accept, but it is enough to give them the benefit of doubt for now.

Here is look at the rankings for five 11-man conferences:
