Paradise Valley knew Cactus Shadows’ quarterback, Bryce Kinsler, was closing in on the Class 4A career passing yardage record, but the Trojans weren’t about to hand it to him on their field.

The Trojans held Kinsler to just 216 yards on the night to fall short of the record for another week, while P.V. rolled up more than 500 yards of offense to run away with a 42-16 victory over the Falcons on Friday night.

Paradise Valley quarterback Ryan Finley stole the show instead. The Boise State-commit finished with 355 yards and three touchdowns on 27-for-39 passing, while running for another score.

Finley helped the Trojans to a 21-16 lead going into the half in what looked to be shaping up into a shootout. In the second half, though, the Trojans buckled down, shutting out Kinsler and the Cactus Shadows (2-7) passing attack the rest of the way.

Paradise Valley (6-3) never allowed Kinsler to get comfortable in the pocket, sacking him 3 times.

Trojans’ receiver Joey Gatewood was Finley’s favorite target on the night, finishing with 11 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Paradise Valley was just a successful, totaling 355 yards led by Bailey Thompson’s 163 yards on 21 carries. Teammate Devon Graffis had 36 yards and a touchdown.

Brophy 59, Westwood 7: Other than an 85-yard second quarter touchdown, host-Brophy did everything right, scoring 28 points in both the first and second quarters to put the game well out of reach early. Broncos’ receiver, Devon Allen, in addition to catching a touchdown, took a punt 43-yards for the first score of the game and the rout was on from there. Quarterback Tyler Bruggman was 9-for-10 passing for 193 yards and three touchdowns for Brophy. Teammate Marche Dennard scored twice himself, carrying the ball 11 times for 89 yards. The Broncos are now 8-2 on the year.

Notre Dame 42, McClintock 7: Notre Dame quarterback Nick Duckworth threw for four scores to lead the Saints (5-4) to a win on the road and keep their Div. II playoff hopes intact. Luke Taffuri and Jordan Schlueter were both on the receiving end of Duckworth touchdown passes, while both also rushed for a score. The Chargers (2-7) got their lone score came in the third quarter when running back Sammy Morris broke off a 97-yard run touchdown run.

Scottsdale Christian 41, Valley Christian 25: Luke O’ Neill did a little bit of everything for Scottsdale Christian. He threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 98 yards and two more scores. Eagles' receivers Alex Katies (five catches for 82 yards and a TD) and Sam Fillingame (four catches for 74 yards) had big games as well. Valley Christian backup quarterback Brandon Haagsma led the Trojans (4-5) with 102 yards and a score on 4-for-10 passing. Scottsdale Christian bumped up its record to 7-1 overall in Div. V.

Payson 28, Coronado 26: Host Payson (5-4) scored a touchdown and converted a two-point conversion late to hang on for the narrow victory. The Dons battled back from 21 points down at halftime and finished with 321 total yards, 99 more than the Longhorns, but fumbled the ball three times, losing two of them. The loss dropped Coronado to 3-6.

Bagdad 56, Gilbert Christian 12: Playing in its first-ever postseason game, No. 10 Gilbert Christian hit the road and the road hit back, as No. 7 Bagdad eliminated the Knights in the first round of the Division VI playoffs. Gilbert Christian ended its season with a 6-3 record. The Sultans will move on to play at No. 2 Mogollon next Friday night in the quarterfinals.

Bryophy did everything right? Does that include sending Westwoods quarterback to the hospital on what was likely to be the last play of the game?
