When you turn the ball over six times, there’s generally a low chance you are able to come out with a win.
For the Seton Catholic football program, the game against Arcadia on Friday night was a test of their will and character. They passed with flying colors as the Sentinels defeated the Titans 20-6.
Seton Catholic benefitted from junior running back Mikey Castro, who rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Castro said the win shows a lot of what the Sentinels are made of.
“Just shows that we need to do the little things like (head) coach (Pete) Wahlheim says and if we do that, we’ll be good,” Castro said.
The game started off in the Titans favor as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead within the first two minutes. The Sentinels were able to drive down the field but once they entered the red zone, the team fumbled the ball for their first turnover. This would be the story for the Sentinels in the first half.
The next time they were in the red zone they fumbled once again on a bad snap during a punt. It did, however, lead to a safety in their favor to make it 6-2. But the Sentinels consistently struggled to convert drives into points, which frustrated Wahlheim.
“You don’t turn the ball over like that in the red zone three times and win games,” Wahlheim said. “So that’s got to get cleaned up and we’re not going to go very far if we don’t take care of the ball.”
Seton Catholic managed to make the necessary adjustment to turn things around in the second half.
The defense consistently applied pressure to Titans quarterback Kadin Beler, which forced an interception in Seton Catholic’s favor and gave the Sentinels great field position.
The turnover eventually led to points for Seton Catholic, as Castro scored on a two-yard run a few plays later. Castro would again find the end zone, this time in on a 75-yard touchdown run right after a three and out by the Titans. The touchdown made it a two-score game and essentially out of reach for the Titans.
Wahlheim said he was proud of his defense for their performance.
“Our defense was able to get some turnovers … you go three quarters and not give up a point against these guys is pretty good,” Wahlheim said. “Proud of the whole scheme, proud of my defensive coaches and we’re going to take care of the ball, I can promise you that.”
The game got out of hand quickly for the Titans, especially once Beler sprained his already injured ankle.
Head coach Kerry Taylor said it was frustrating to see his offense blow the numerous opportunities the team had thanks to the turnovers, citing the lack of execution by the team, especially after the first drive.
“The plays were there just like they were in the first quarter,” Taylor said. “We just didn’t make the throws and upfront we struggled to protect at times. We got a lot of guys out this week, it’s not an excuse but other guys had to step up … all the guys gave great effort we just didn’t find a way to execute and get it done.”
With the playoffs looming, every game is vital for every team, especially those on the outside looking in. For Arcadia (5-4, 0-3), the team has a bye then a road game against Poston Butte (3-4, 0-2).
Seton Catholic (5-2, 2-1) also has a road game as they go up north to face Flagstaff (4-3, 2-2) next week.
