Demolition begins at Paradise Valley Mall
A giant crane demolishes a portion of the Paradise Valley Mall Tuesday.

Two giant cranes jabbed at the foundations of the Paradise Valley Mall entrance to the old Macy’s wing until the massive block of cement crashed to the asphalt parking lot.

Wholesale giant Costco is pegged to replace the nearly deserted wing of the northeast Phoenix shopping center.

Mall owner Westcor is lopping off 40,000 square feet of abandoned store shells leading to the 180,000-square-foot big box that housed Macy’s before parent Federated bought, then dumped, the Robinsons-May chain and moved Macy’s into the middle-of-the-mall anchor spot.

Once the wing is demolished, Costco plans to build a stand-alone, 154,000-square-foot building in its place, and Westcor will fashion a new mall entrance at the stump formed by Things Remembered and Regis Hairstylists, two of the four surviving stores in the section.

Costco is expected to start ringing up sales in spring 2009.
