Joe Sullivan

For the second consecutive year, voters rated Joe Sullivan the best high school teacher and they’ll have one chance to make it a threepeat: He’s planning to retire at the end of next school year, when he hits the 30-year mark in his career – all spent at Mountain View. He’s enjoyed his career on many levels, explaining, “What better way to enrich 9,000 lives in 30 years?” He enjoys “seeing students’ reactions to their own success when they complete a piece of jewelry that is well made” and “getting my students to understand my definition of art – art is making something new, a new idea or form never seen before.” “Processes to make art involve skills that anyone can learn,” he adds, “but it’s what you do in a new way with those processes that makes for art.”
