Old and new come together for family antiques and resale business
By Mandy Zajac
The antiques may have been around the block more than a few times, but Call it New/Call it Antique is a Mesa first for father and son, Rand and Ryan Erbach.
“We thought it would take us a year to fill the place — to get the word out and get people to bring in their items. But we filled the antique section in four months, and all along the entire front of our building, about 275 feet across, is consignment merchandise,” Rand said.
The 42,000-square-foot space, a former hardware store at Broadway and Dobson roads, reopened as the combination antiques mall and resale shop in May 2014 after the Erbachs headed a detailed renovation designed to optimize the shopping experience for customers and the display of merchandise for vendors.
“We have about 200 antiques dealers,” Rand said. “We have a lot of antique furniture, a lot of the very popular shabby chic-style painted furniture, a lot of primitives. We have one dealer who has an entire room of records.”
A separate part of the mall is devoted to gently used resale items. Current home decor, furniture, clothing and accessories for men, women, children and babies are among the offerings.
“We’re very particular about the condition of what we take on consignment. A customer has to feel like they can call it new, like our name says, when they purchase an item,” Rand said
The store’s relationship with its vendors is also important. It offers affordable rent on stalls within the mall, and Call it New/Call it Antique staffs the place so dealers don’t have to remain on site to sell their goods.
The Erbachs opened Call it New/Call it Antique’s original location four years ago in Stevens Point, Wisc. That store is still owned and operated by the family.
Rand says it’s a fun business to take on together.
“People love to browse among antiques. They bring back memories, and everyone seems to have at least one, whether it’s something handed down through the family or something sitting in the basement,” he said.
Call it New/Call it Antique will host an outdoor sidewalk sale on April 18 on its covered, 14-foot-wide sidewalk and 3,000-square-foot patio. The event coincides with a storewide sale inside the mall the entire weekend.
