Russell Pearce
Senate President Russell Pearce

One of the competing groups trying to recall Senate President Russell Pearce has shifted its strategy and is focusing its efforts on Republican Mormons who are normally staunch Pearce supporters.

Arizonans for a Better Government will launch weekly forums featuring a conservative Republican — who is also Mormon — rather than focusing on Democrats or others who are already inclined not to support Pearce. The anti-Pearce group will begin passing out fliers this weekend and in April will ramp up efforts with lectures, said Dee Dee Blasé, a founder of Somos Republicans and member of Arizonans for a Better Government.

“The strategy that we’re using is we believe that in order to have a fully effective recall Russell Pearce effort, the change is going to have to come from within,” Blasé said. “And that’s from within the Mormon community in Mesa.”

Key to that is having Mormons convince other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she said. The forums will feature Daryl Williams, a trial lawyer who has held many church positions. His family roots include some of the first Mormons, and Blasé said he’ll argue that Pearce’s bills on immigration, education and other issues violate church teachings. She called him a “die-hard, very staunch Republican.”

The group’s new focus came out of desperation. It was the first recall effort to file paperwork with the Arizona Secretary of State on January 27, but within days a second recall was started by Citizens for a Better Arizona. The second group was better funded and its efforts include paying people to gather signatures.

About half the volunteers with Arizonans for a Better Government shifted alliances with the ability to get paid, leaving the original group struggling.

A rift developed between Blasé and Randy Parraz of Citizens for a Better Arizona, but Blasé said she didn’t want to throw in the towel. The development improved the original group’s plan, Blasé said. “It was a bittersweet blessing that he did what he did and it’s working out for the best,” she said.

Blasé said the group has raised less than $1,000 and has about 30 volunteers who’ve gathered 2,100 signatures. To force a recall, 7,756 valid signatures must be gathered,

which is 25 percent of ballots cast in the November election for Mesa’s Legislative District 18. Signatures must be submitted within 120 days of the campaign’s start.

Parraz said he was assembling his group before he heard of Blasé filing paperwork. He went ahead because he doubted the rival group’s ability.

“They don’t have much of a program. They don’t have much funding,” Parraz said. “I wish there were two efforts going on. There’s really just one.”

Parraz, a 2010 Democrat Senate candidate, amassed a war chest of more than $10,000, with 230 volunteers in the anti-Pearce effort. The group has posted paid signature gatherers at the downtown Mesa Library nearly every day. On a warm Friday afternoon, the gatherer was approached by Hilario Otero, who drove from Chandler to learn he wasn’t eligible to sign because he’s not in Pearce’s district. He said Pearce wasn’t for Arizona residents but didn’t offer specifics.

“He’s just trying to make points. He wants to be on top of the hill,” Otero said.

Rosalio Rojas of Mesa lives in Pearce’s district and signed the petition. He planned to return so his wife and two children could sign, too.

“All my family, we don’t want him,” he said.

Citizens for a Better Arizona has thousands of signatures and is meeting its collection goals, Parraz said. He wouldn’t offer a number.

“Russell Pearce is one of the most powerful men in the state,” he said. “It does us no good to broadcast what we have.”

As An Aside

I can't help but think how the leaders of Mormon Church must be cringing when they see examples of the media (or on-line commenters) assuming that Russell Pearce's views on immigration are the same as those of the Church. They are worlds apart. The "average Mormon" in this world is increasingly likely to speak Spanish as his first language, and the Church cares most about the welfare of individuals and families. From its perspective, we're all God's children whose desire to live and raise our families should be encouraged and supported by the laws of whatever land we may live in.

The Mormon church has publicly stated its own views on immigration, publicly endorsing the "Utah Compact" supported by a broad group of community leaders in Utah that led to some recent changes in Utah immigration law. Here's the text of the Utah Compact:

"FEDERAL SOLUTIONS: Immigration is a federal policy issue between the U.S. government and other countries — not Utah and other countries. We urge Utah's congressional delegation, and others, to lead efforts to strengthen federal laws and protect our national borders. We urge state leaders to adopt reasonable policies addressing immigrants in Utah.
LAW ENFORCEMENT: We respect the rule of law and support law enforcement's professional judgment and discretion. Local law enforcement resources should focus on criminal activities, not civil violations of federal code.
FAMILIES: Strong families are the foundation of successful communities. We oppose policies that unnecessarily separate families. We champion policies that support families and improve the health, education and well-being of all Utah children.
ECONOMY: Utah is best served by a free-market philosophy that maximizes individual freedom and opportunity. We acknowledge the economic role immigrants play as workers and taxpayers. Utah's immigration policies must reaffirm our global reputation as a welcoming and business-friendly state.
A FREE SOCIETY: Immigrants are integrated into communities across Utah. We must adopt a humane approach to this reality, reflecting our unique culture, history and spirit of inclusion. The way we treat immigrants will say more about us as a free society and less about our immigrant neighbors. Utah should always be a place that welcomes people of goodwill."

The Mormon Church said that the Utah Compact was "consistent with important principles" for which the Church stands and added:

"We follow Jesus Christ by loving our neighbors. The Savior taught that the meaning of “neighbor” includes all of God’s children, in all places, at all times. We recognize an ever-present need to strengthen families. Families are meant to be together. Forced separation of working parents from their children weakens families and damages society. We acknowledge that every nation has the right to enforce its laws and secure its borders. All persons subject to a nation’s laws are accountable for their acts in relation to them. Public officials should create and administer laws that reflect the best of our aspirations as a just and caring society. Such laws will properly balance love for neighbors, family cohesion, and the observance of just and enforceable laws."

Do these principles sound like Russell Pearce's world view to you?

Will they stop at nothing? Obviously not....

Hatred for Russel Pearce who is only doing what the majority of Arizonians want is one thing, but to attack his religion is a new and profound low for the socialista racists. Where do you all keep your pride these days? In the toilet?

Somos Republican, Hispanic Congressional Caucus, Hispanic this, Hispanic that; they all sound a lot like La Raza. Get real folks, this is the United States of America. Quit trying to create another set of citizens as opposed to one nation unified. We have laws and the illegals have violated our laws. Lets not forget the the vast majority of them are carrying fraudulent or stolen identity which is a felony. How many of the illegal males between the ages of 18 to 25 have not registered for the Selective Service which is also a felony. It is too bad that the U.S. does not require women to register like many other countries do. Why is it that the Hispanic community at large supports illegal activity when they should be upholding our laws?

just got another message from DeeDee, Somos Republicans: DeeDee Blase also commented on her link.

DeeDee wrote:
"Russell Pearce is telling LDS members that he supports constitution. Are you a
PEarce plant? You have come to be quite the apologist."

she's got to be kidding. Not only does she use profanities on a public forum and lies this woman is paranoid. Yeah Russel Pearce is responsible for everything anything. But this organization does support illegals to break the law. As for the church supporting the Utah compact that was LDS members but they were not speaking for the church. The only one that can speak for the church is the president of the Mormon church. What ever members do outside the church is not endorsed by the Mormon church. She will continue to harass and trespass on church grounds while people are worshiping.

Did DeeDee Blase really say, "I will stop going to the Mormon Church when they stop deporting my people because of your hero, Russell Pearce?"

So "her people" are lawbreakers? Don't think I'd want to know her.

And somehow Russell Pearce caused them to be lawbreakers who should be deported? Good grief.

Too bad that church seems to support lawbreaking in Utah. I darned sure hope they're not like that here in AZ.

Just so every one knows the people going to the Mormons church to disrupt services is DeeDee Blase Pres. of Somos Republicans. They are there to harass the people at the temple to get them to sign recall petitions for Russell Pearce. They actually call themselves Republicans. The are for open borders, Mexican rights, and every thing Mr.Leon Ceniceros said that Arizonans for a better Government. They are the same.

DeeDee from Somos Republicans:
DeeDee stop going to the Mormon church to get your petitions signed. you are using the Mormon church for your own political agenda considering you and Somos Republicans criticize and seem to despise Mormons. Keep deleting as that's your style it's all about censorship with you. You censor everything that you don't agree with. A place of worship no matter what religion is not acceptable for your agenda.

Antonella Cecilia Packard ‎"Brother" Pearce needs to stop using the LDS Church (this is what we prefer to call ourselves) for his political agenda. The LDS Church supports the Utah Compact and the Presiding Bishop of the LDS Church was present at the Utah Governor's signing of the immigration bills recently passed by the Utah State Legislature. This act has drawn the ire of the likes of William Gheen of ALI PAC and other anti-immigrant groups who dislike the Utah Compact.
Russell Pearce is not using the LDS church for his political agenda. As a Mormon politics are not allowed to be discussed and everyone including Russell Pearce makes his own bad decisions. What I don't approve of and it is inappropriate to to target Mormons when all I hear it is a lot of criticism of the church and many of the people seem to despise Mormons. This is hypocritical to smile and pretend to be a friend of the Mormons and all along hate them. Whether it be a Catholic Church, Baptist, Jehovah witness that is a place of worship. In district 18 there are many non-Mormons who live there. we do not support Russell Pearce but will not allow people like DeeDee to trespass on church grounds.

DeeDee, when you go looking for your signatures stay away from the Mormon church that is a place of worship. Yours are political issues not religious. Especially when all your followers from Somos Republicans have made it very clear they dislike Mormons.

Been volunteering for Citizens for a Better Arizona from the start, and have never heard any of this negativity . Never been paid . Most of us do it because it is the right thing to do . Good luck .

this is just one example that is on their Facebook Russell Pearce recall election government organization, how would you like someone targeting your church? Rosalie Triviz Williams
Opal Black Interesting , i just read that piece of excrement ,Russel Pierce Is A Mormon..I Have always said it ,those Righteous Holier than thou are the worst Hypocrites , And i say this from personal experience.

in reading your article I have made it a point to do my research on both DeeDee Blase and Randy Parraz. DeeDee who is the president of Samos Republicans in my opinion is not trustworthy and I would not believe a word she says. As a member of the LDS church and also Republican and a precinct committee member I would not behave the way this woman does publicly. On her Facebook she uses obscenities and feels that it's appropriate and her treasurer thinks it's appropriate to use the F word, that these are public figures who should be role models for young women. What I find even more alarming is that she has made it very clear that she is targeting Mormons and going to the Mormon Temple in their parking lot .. I do care what religion pearce belongs to, that is totally inappropriate. And on her posts there are people who made comments that Mormons saying those Mormons are holier than thou hypocrites. Who are the hypocrites here, Somos as Republicans are. They hate Mormons yet they put on a smile and target Mormons to sign their petition. Why is she going to the Mormon Temple? Russell Pearce is not there in on Sundays everyone is at church not at the Temple. Somos Republicans are true racists and they need to stop. There many who live in district 18 who are not LDS. as for the other individual Randy Parraz I do have some respect for him because he is not targeting Mormons only and not going to their place of worship. Whether it be Catholic, Baptist, Jehovah witness leave the religion out of it.

Dale, perhaps all of you brothers and sisters will find all of the answers on the planet Kobal. Until then I support Pearce's endeavors to curtail the illegal alien's blood sucking of Arizona's resources. No Dale, they are not here just to pick lettuce and tomatoes.

No Dale, I don't. Do you still beat your wife?

I'm sure these anti pearce haters will be hanging around the Easter Pagent to hand out their fliers along with all the anti's too. Which most of the literature will never get read and end up on the street or in the garbage. Regardless if they did even get enough signatures that were actually legal voters to even get a recall it would never win. Pearce has way way to much support. Lost cause!

Do you have any statistics which say how many illegal aliens are not in any of the above statistics?

All good points and accurate. These people are very racist, and to top it off, they drag religion into American government, just like the Taliban.

They are pure evil and Americans should treat them as Taliban. [ban]
What would you do if the Taliban came here and tried to take over the government of our country? [sneaky]

I would protect it.

Lets DEE DEE, vets with me,

Marcus Gallio

Dee Dee Blasé, Randy Parraz and the "queen/king" of political poison, un-mentioned Kyrsten Sinema have united to dispose of the Russell Pearce. This is all under the guise of Mormon Values. The Devil can't get elected as the Devil, so they have to disguise themselves as Christ. So lets look at what this 3-headed Devil really embraces.

1. Krysten Sinema - abortion at will, even for high school females, without telling their parents and expecting the tax-paying Citizens of Arizone to pay for it. THIS IS TOTALLY AGAINST THE SANCTITY OF LIFE IN THE MORMON RELIGION.

2. Dee Dee/Randy/Krysten - total embrace of the anti-Reverand Al Sharpton, going so far as to lock arms with him during his 90 minute visit to Phoenix last year. Sharpton is the king of peddling crack cocaine among poor residents of Harlem. He was filmed by NBC News engaging in transactions - while wearing a cowboy hat - thats his connection to Arizona. DRUGS ARE TOTALLY AGAINST THE PURITY OF LIFE IN THE MORMON RELIGION.

4. Dee Dee/Randy/Krysten ALL embrace the destruction of LEGAL immigration in order to allow the illegal coyotes, drug cartel mules and criminal elements from southy of our border to flood into the United States in order to support those who support them. THIS VIOLATION OF ESTABLISHED IMMIGRATION LAW AND USE OF DRUGS AND SLAVE LABOR IS TOTALLY AGAINST THE BELIEFS OF THE MORMON RELIGION.

Sure, sure, these three will disguise themselves as Christ like figures. But we know them for what they are, have supported, have espoused and embrace. THE DEVIL AND AGAINST EVERYTHING WHICH THE MORMAN FAITH STANDS FOR.

LinMesa, You are pushing your religion on others. Will you consider moving to Saudi Arabia where they have made your sort of shoving your religion down others' throats an art?

Nobody is saying that we will "mistreat" anyone in this country illegally. We ARE saying that stealing an identity is against our laws and anyone caught doing it should go to prison, White Meth-Head, Mexican illegal alien. And we also ARE saying that anyone knowingly hiring someone in this country illegally needs to pay all public costs for that person and their family, and the employer should go to prison. How is that "mistreatment" of anyone not stealing identities?

If you don't agree with that, then let's get rid of all speeding, red light running laws, all import tariffs, all laws that were applied to Bernie Maddoff and pretty much all other laws in our nation.

Americans for American sovereignty will back Mr. Pearce against the racists & religious kooks.

I do not know where you heard about anyone pushing for "open borders". I have never heard of anyone who is. But the people that are in this country should not be mistreated. Somehow, I would expect better from Christians. God is certainly against this type of behavior.

As for the fighting between the two groups, who cares who gets the most legal signatures as long as there are enough to recall Pearce.

tripgabby, your post about the need for education is right on. Until you say "I don't care if they are legal or illegal." OK, will you personally fund all illegal aliens' education then? Because the law is the law. We citizens are having a tough enough time paying for legal citizens' childrens' education, we don't need another nearly $1 Billion additional to pay for people that are here illegally.

You racists who push for open borders purely to let the Hispanics from Central America and Mexico pour in are clueless about the reality of economics. Someone has to pay for them, their employers aren't, they aren't and I sure am not going to. So again, will you and your racist friends pick up the full tab for educating Anchor Babies and the illegal alien children.

Tick tock, tick tock......we're waiting for an answer...

The Tea Party that is grown into a membership of tens of millions, will rid the corruption from Washington, which also includes the collusion in State legislators. Currently the Tea Party is discussing the--BOYCOTT--of corporations and businesses that used veiled threats to overturn the harsh policing laws and illegal immigration enforcement in Arizona. America cannot afford to pander to economic immigrants, that has risen to over 20 million. Instant citizenship for babies of pregnant Mothers to slip through the US Border Patrol, to intentionally take advantage of US taxpayers. Thousands who have evacuated the great State of Arizona, will be en route to California, Nevada, Colorado and of course Utah. Other illegal aliens and their families will search for other States to settle. Southern States are less welcoming and will certainly be located, with Tennessee and more rigid enforcement States ready to hand them over to ICE. Others illegal immigration laws, didn't get enough votes to pass. It seems that a majority of those corporations who signed the US Arizona Chamber of Commerce viewed threat letter to the State Senate were in the construction industry. In actual fact Contractors and Sub-Contractors are a very large dirty business owner hiring illegal alien workers, while 10 million US citizens and people with legal residency are searching for jobs. Anybody whose interested in stopping the illegal alien invasion to save their jobs and stop illegal aliens pilfering the welfare entitlement programs, should contact your local TEA PARTY.

It is sickening to me to see the East Valley Tribune allow Hispanic racists "The Race - La Raza" and their apologists post racist positions. Would the same be allowed for the White KKK like it is for the Brown KKK?

I don't care what religion Pearce is, and anyone that is voting for or against anyone because of their religion can just get the heck out of the USA. Might I suggest Saudi Arabia as your most natural place of residence?

As a legal immigrant to the USA who worked hard, followed the rules, spent a lot of time, money and energy to become a legal US citizen, I have nothing but disdain for the racists. They are not one whit better than the Ku Klux Klan!

NO to illegal immigration! NO to Chain Babies! NO to the racist push for Amnesty!
YES to legal immigration if you are not already in the USA illegally! YES to not allowing legal immigration based on culture, language, religion or origin country. Lottery only, and if you don't get the lucky number, stay OUT of the USA!

I support Russell Pearce 100% Same goes for Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Our family appreciates their fight against the lawless racists pushing for Amnesty!

I think Marcus is not in touch with reality. Illegal imigration is really on the back burner of citizens in Arizona. It is a political high for those trying to make it to the front of the newspaper and get some press. Our greatest concern for the ongoing funding of social security and medicare is the education of our children. Pearce etal believe that the elderly should get full coverage over the cost of the education of our children. Unfortunately the elderly and babyboomers will suffer the greatest as there will not be enough educated young people to pay for the entitlement programs, provide elderly services, and have medical care for the elderly. Brewer, Pearce, etal will be laying in some hospital at the end of their days (as we all get there eventually) and their care giver will probably have a high school diploma or a computer that monitors their care. This state and nation are in great need for skilled and college educated labor and I don't care if they are legal or illegal. It is punitive to deny this country college educated young people that we have educated from working in this country. It is further irresponsible behavior and to cut the budget for education as the only hope to save this nation from self destructing is educating our young.

Marcus Gallio

What the dishonest liberal media wants the readers to believe (and the person who misreported this story is one of those people) is we are not against immigration. We are against illegal immigration. And against, the heinous attempts to work around legal immigration by "anchor babies" and "border crossings", etc.

Our LEGAL American Citizens of Mexican descent are welcome in America because they are Americans. ILLEGAL ones are not welcome.

So get your facts straight - unless you don't want to get your facts straight because you have an agenda which is PRO-ILLEGAL.

NO se pueda!

DeeDee Blase

An excerpt from Daryl William's essay on what he will be lecturing on in Mesa:

"How can someone with a religious and moral foundation rationalize the breakup of families and the deportation of individuals who were brought into this country as infants and know no other country? Is it not tantamount to oppression of the “strangers” among us? And, as discussed above, deleterious to our economy? Lots of people say that they believe in honoring and sustaining the law, but they are too quick to repeat this aphoristic refrain without deeper consideration. Was it right for the founding fathers to flout the laws of England and King George? Germany required extermination of the Jews, making it a crime even to harbor or to protect Jews from the death camps; were those laws to be honored and sustained by religious adherents to the Bible, either the Old or New Testament? Was the internment of the Japanese in Word War II a “good” law? Did Rosa Parks really break a law deserving honor and support when she refused to give up her seat to a white person and move to the back of the bus? The rubric of honor and sustain, in other words, is no refuge for those who support immigration laws just because they are the laws."

“Russell Pearce, the chief proponent of Arizona’s immigration laws is, like me, a Mormon. His views, however, do not reflect the official position of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the official name of the Mormon church. Indeed, Mr. Pearce’s views are inconsistent with the official position of his church.”

There are two efforts. We can be at the library, too, everyday, but we want to avoid redundancy. Would Randy Parraz rather have two people at the library from two different recalls collecting signatures? Wouldn't he be upset at us if we were there? Is he challenging us to go to the Mesa library? If he wants us to be there, we can certainly make that happen, however, it is SMART for us to concentrate on Republican Mormons since the change is going to have to happen from within. Also, let the record be clear that media, myself and other members of Arizonans for Better Government reached out to Randy before we filed the lawsuit against Pearce, however, he did not return several of our calls. So we filed on the day the 14th amendment hearings were being heard for symbolic reasons. The day after we filed, Randy showed up to our press conference where we asked him to join our efforts before he filed the 2nd recall effort. He declined to join our efforts. I shook his hand at our press conference but he said he didn't want to. Later he called me and yelled at me for telling reporters the truth, and he eventually hung up on me. I have not heard from him since then until one of our unpaid volunteers went to the library, and his Field Director got on the phone with me and didn't want us to be there collecting signatures. I Randy's Field Director to give us a call (since he hung up on me in January), but I didn't receive one. My door is still open....but in the meantime, w plan on creating Mormon circulators since the change as to come from within -- and we acknowledge that. We acknowledge that members of the LDS community will have to be the ones to ultimately overthrow Mr. Pearce.

Where Dee Dee Blasé can say that "Daryl Williams, a [Mormon] trial lawyer who has held many church positions [and whose] family roots include some of the first Mormons, [will] argue that Pearce’s bills on immigration, education and other issues violate church teachings" [can she still call Brother Williams] a “die-hard, very staunch Republican?”

Yes she can! Like Brother Williams, I too have similar roots, believe his positions fundamentally violate basic church principles and am a vevy staunch and Conservative Republican. The difference between Brother Williams and I on the one hand and Brother Pearce on the other, is an in depth understanding of applicable principles, both religious and philosophical. True Conservatives apply time tested and well conceived conservative principles to new problems. Neo-cons apply shallow mis-conceptions of what they think a conservative should do.

An odd fact is that Karl Rove graduated from high school in Salt Lake City. Yet he is not a Latter-day Saint, and dropped out of college to support Bush 41 against Reagan, never returning to campus as a student. Where Newt Gingich is the patron saint of neo-conservatism, Karl Rove has become its arcangel publicist and strategist.
