It didn’t really matter how they got it, Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep needed a win.

And the 20-19 triumph over San Tan Valley Poston Butte at Scottsdale Community College evened the banged-up Saints record to 2-2.

“It’s a whole different psyche being 2-2 instead of 1-3,” said Saints coach Gary Gregory, who had that “too many to count” look when asked how many starters were on the bench in jerseys, but no shoulder pads, due to injuries. “We’ve got a chance to get a couple of those kids back.

“I’m really proud of how tough our kids played tonight.”

Both teams scored three touchdowns, but the Broncos missed two points after touchdowns and turned the ball over twice, both leading to Notre Dame scores.

“Ball security,” were the two simple words Poston Butte coach Michael De La Torre used when asked what kept his club from picking up a fourth win in five weeks. The Broncos will take a 3-2 record into their contest next week at Marana Mountain View.

“We had the interception before the half and the fumble (in the fourth quarter) in key situations,” added the coach. “In a tight ball game having a negative in ball security is a big deal.”

Tied 13-13 with time running out in the third quarter, Poston Butte got to the Notre Dame 24 and were on third down and eight, quarterback Russell Corriveau dropped the ball at the 36, where the Saints recovered it.

Notre Dame Prep answered with an eight-play, 64-yard scoring drive. Benefiting from a pass interference call in the end zone, Saints quarterback Tom Lehman threw his second touchdown pass of the night, connecting with Jordan Schlueter on a 12-yard score with 9:49 left. Grayson Naquin, who earlier missed his first point after attempt of the season, connected this time for a 20-19 lead.

Poston Butte, led by running backs Brandon Hatfield and Dante Romero, moved the Broncos down the field for an 11-play, 66-yard drive that left only 1:36 on the clock when Hatfield scored on an 11-yard run. But, for the second time, Corriveau was unsuccessful on a point after attempt.

The Broncos had one more chance with 1:02 left and no timeouts, but the drive ended when Schlueter, who also had a first-half interception, knocked down a deep pass on fourth down just in front of the goal line.

“That’s a very good football team,” Gregory said. “They were 3-1 and had every right to be. They should be proud of themselves as well as we are of our kids. It was a very good football game.”

The Saints play at Phoenix St. Mary’s next week.
