What started out as a close defensive battle turned into a one-sided affair as host Desert Ridge beat Brophy 38-14 on Friday. The Jaguars (4-1) outscored the Broncos (1-4), 31-7 in the second half en route to their fourth straight win after losing their season opener.
Desert Ridge, as usual, used a run-heavy offense and rushed the ball 38 times for 323 yards. Most of those yards came from Taren Morrison, who carried the ball 20 times for 219 yards and four touchdowns.
“The offensive line opened up huge holes for me today. I have to give all the credit to the offensive line,” he said.
Morrison opened the scoring in the game with a 76-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, which followed a missed field goal by Brophy.
“I just saw the whole on my first touchdown and tried to run as fast as I could,” he said.
The missed field goal by Brophy came after Desert Ridge fumbled on the first play from scrimmage in the game. With a short field to defend, the Desert Ridge defense forced the field goal attempt and came away unscathed after the missed kick.
That trend continued, as Desert Ridge had two more fumbles in the first half. But the Broncos were only able to score seven points, courtesy of a 16-yard run by Ryan Velez, off those three turnovers.
“Our defense did a great job getting some turnovers. But we were only able to capitalize on one. We fought hard, especially in the first half but couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half. They have a lot of speed and they were able to break a few in the second half offensively,” said Brophy coach Scooter Molander.
After Morrison’s twin brother, Tarek, gave Desert Ridge the lead back with a 39 yard touchdown run, Taren broke another long run for six with a 58-yard carry to the end zone. At that point, with Desert Ridge leading 24-7, the rout was on.
“The fact we were able to put 38 points up tonight against Brophy was amazing. I don’t know the last time Brophy gave up 38 points. We played disciplined and focused football. We did a much better job with ball security in the second half,” said Desert Ridge coach Jeremy Hathcock.
Velez had a very productive game for the Broncos – he rushed the ball 17 times for 113 with two touchdowns, and Brian Woodward recovered two of the three Desert Ridge fumbles.
