A pair of local standouts have cut down their list of possible college destinations.
Hamilton defensive end Qualen Cunningham is one of the top-rated football players in Arizona, listed as a four-star recruit on Rivals.com. He had more than a dozen scholarship offers but has pared his possible choice to five schools: Arizona State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas A&M and USC.
Texas A&M is thought to be the leader, as Cunningham's dad, Rick, played there in college. Arizona State is also seen as a legitimate landing point. Cunningham has not announced a deadline for his decision.
In boys basketball news, Pinnacle star small forward Dorian Pickens has narrowed his list to seven colleges. The programs still under his consideration are Arizona State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Stanford, USC, Oklahoma State and UCLA.
Pickens averaged 17.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game while shooting 55 percent from the floor as a junior.
If he ends up with the Sun Devils, he would join a recruiting class that already features local players Kodi Justice (Dobson) and Connor MacDougall (Corona del Sol). If he ends up at Oregon, he would join reigning Tribune Player of the Year Casey Benson, who led Corona del Sol to a second straight Division I title in February, beating Pickens' Pinnacle team.
