State soccer roundup: Hamilton tops Mountain View in OT

Facing an emotional Mountain View squad at home, the Hamilton boys soccer team was able to score two goals in overtime to hold off the Toros 3-1 and advance to the second round.

BOYS 5A-I

Facing an emotional Mountain View squad at home, the Hamilton boys soccer team was able to score two goals in overtime to hold off the Toros 3-1 and advance to the second round.

Down 1-0 at halftime on a Bryan Suarez goal, Mountain View’s Carlos Bustillos scored on a free kick with 11 minutes left in the game to tie the score at one and force overtime.

In the extra period, Hamilton was able to get goals from Zachary Nasipak and Tony Flores, giving the Huskies a 3-1 lead they wouldn’t give back. Michael Markette assisted on two of Hamilton’s three goals.

Both teams dedicated this game to former Toros soccer coach Kevin Sullivan, who passed away in October. His son, Michael, is the current Red Mountain coach. ...

Storm Lilly scored two goals in the first 24 minutes and Gilbert, the No. 6 seed, eliminated Phoenix Maryvale, the No. 11 seed, 4-1, at Gilbert High.

In other games, No. 1 Salpointe beat No. 16 Chandler 2-1, No. 3 San Luis escaped No. 14 Brophy’s upset bid 4-2 in overtime, fifth-seeded Corona del Sol crushed No. 12 Mesa 5-1, and No. 8 Mesquite edged No. 9 Buena 1-0. The Kofa/ Tucson game was postponed to today after a bomb threat at Tucson High School.

BOYS 5A-II

Perry’s Arturo Molina broke a 3-3 tie in his team’s penalty kick shootout Tuesday against Chaparral, sending the ninth-seeded Pumas to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Firebirds.

Molina added two goals in regulation and Chris Aguirre tied the game at 3 in the 78th minute, setting up the overtime. Chaparral got goals from Matthew Matiski, Michael Holbura and John Mercier.

In other games, top-seeded Millennium dominated Ironwood Ridge 8-2, No. 2 Pinnacle beat up on Sunnyside 5-0, No. 4 Carl Hayden beat Boulder Creek 1-0, No. 3 Tolleson edged Camelback 1-0, 12th-seeded Rincon pulled the biggest upset of the night in the conference with a 1-0 win over No. 5 Deer Valley, while 11th-seeded Central had a surprising upset as well after taking down No. 6 Ironwood 2-1, and No. 7 Desert Mountain survived 2-1 against No. 10 La Joya.

BOYS 4A-I

Sahuaro, the 15th seed, pulled a stunning upset with a 5-0 blowout win over second-ranked Glendale. Up next for Sahuaro is another lower seed, No. 10 Catalina Foothills, which upended No. 7 Moon Valley in penalty kicks.

Top-seeded Canyon del Oro narrowly escaped another upset to No. 16 McClintock with 2-1 win in overtime. Otherwise, the brackets held up as planned with No. 5 Cactus Shadows, No. 4 Apollo, No. 3 Agua Fria, and No. 6 Sabino all moving on as expected.

BOYS 4A-II

Coronado, the 12th seed, upset No. 5 Thunderbird 2-1 to advance to the second round and set up a meeting with No. 4 Verrado.

No. 2 Tempe cruised into the quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over 15-seed Desert Edge and will face upset-minded Palo Verde, who took down No. 7 Mingus 4-0. Six-ranked Notre Dame moved on as well after handling Washington 4-1 and will take on No. 3 Amphitheater.

Top-seed Cortez moved on without incident, beating Sahuarita 5-0 and will go up against No. 8 Mohave.

BOYS 1A/2A/3A

All up the top-seeds advanced without a single upset in this bracket, including eight-seeded Scottsdale Christian moving past No. 9 Wickenburg 3-2.

Next up for the Eagles is top-seeded Pusch Ridge which beat Tanque Verde 1-0. No. 4 Valley Christian beat South Pointe 1-0 to set up a matchup with No. 5 Stafford. Other winners included No. 2 Florence, No. 3 Northwest Christian, No. 6 Estrella Foothills, and No. 7 Fountain Hills all advancing.
