A smothering defense and timely offense powered Scottsdale Desert Mountain (2-0) to a 30-13 win over Anthem Boulder Creek Friday in a 5A nonregion football game at Anthem.
The Wolves threw Anthem quarterback Taylor Davis for negative yards 10 times.
"They outworked us. Taylor was running all night," Boulder Creek coach Dan Friedman said. "They were stronger and faster."
Defensive back Lance Harper used his speed to sack Davis for a safety.
On offense, Wolves senior receiver Jordan Fox turned a pair of screen passes into long plays of 43 and 46 yards, including one touchdown.
The second catch was "a back-breaker," Harper said. "It changed the game," pulling Desert Mountain out of a third-and-18 deep in their territory.
Boulder Creek scored at the end of each half, on passes to senior tailback Dashawn Briggs.
"Give them credit. They never quit," Wolves coach Tony Tabor said.
