Hitting has rarely been a problem for the Corona del Sol softball team, but coach Jeep Ray had been waiting for the middle of her lineup to string those hits together, which they did Thursday afternoon, and at the right time.

A late Basha comeback appeared to set the stage for extra innings, especially when the Aztecs were down to their final out of the seventh inning.

But the inning never ended. Cleanup hitter Caylyn Carlson scorched a double to right-center field. Kelsey Starr scored and host Corona (17-5) atoned for a loss earlier this week with a 3-2 victory.

Basha won a one-run game earlier this week against Corona, but in a game which both left both sides scratching their heads over chances missed, the home team had the last laugh.

Ray wasn't happy following a loss to Desert Vista this week and felt only a little better after the loss to Basha. Errors aside, she felt even better after Thursday's win.

It started with the middle of the order. Starr and Carlson combined for four hits, three walks and Carlson drove in two runs.

"It was nice to see them come through," Ray said. "They've struggled just a bit, and haven't strung anything together lately."

Carlson's first-inning single scored Casey Willow, and Ashley Hanson ripped a triple in the fifth, then scored on Vanessa Alvarez's sacrifice fly.

The Bears (21-6) had chances in the second and fifth innings but came up empty. They finally countered in the sixth on an RBI single by Bri Benjamin and a bases-loaded walk by Samantha Parlich, but seemed poised for one or two more.

"We just needed the big hit," said Basha coach Scott Hoffmeyer.

Both sides have games today — the fourth this week for Corona — so even though both teams have two losses in the 5A Central Region, there isn't time to worry about standings.
