Youth served Saguaro Friday in a 30-0 win over visiting Arcadia in 4A East Sky action.
Running behind two freshman linemen, Sabercat Tyler Porras racked up 229 yards on 18 carries, including a 77-yard touchdown run.
"My offensive line did a great job," said the junior. "Even with two starters out, the freshmen stepped it up."
Saguaro coach Mike Reardon said his offense didn’t execute as he’d like, but he had to laud the efforts of freshmen Chris Merrill and Derrick Bisgad.
"When you get 229 yards out of a running back, you have to be doing something right," he said.
The Sabercats (5-1, 2-0) scored on their first possession, a 22-yard strike from John Sanders to John Casale.
The Titans (2-4, 1-2) came right back, getting a firstand-goal at the 4 on a drive keyed by a 32-yard pass from Max Tenney to Eric Heimberg. Saguaro ended up getting eight shots at the goal after a fourth-down pass interference gave the Sabercats a new first down at the 1, but they couldn’t find the end zone.
Saguaro put the game away in the second quarter on Porras’ 77-yarder and a 3-yard TD pass to Ronnie Luko. Titan Alex McDuffie picked off Sanders at the 5 to prevent another Sabercat score.
