VX Girls Basketball state tournament roundup 2/13: Mountain View beats Tucson

No. 19 Mountain View upset No. 14 Tucson High in the Old Pueblo, 55-40, on Wednesday night in the first round of the Division I girls basketball state tournament.

Sabrina Haines led the Toros (18-9) with 19 points. Cherokee Davis and Armani Hawkins finished with 14 apiece.

Mountain View will travel to No. 3 Pinnacle on Friday at 7 p.m. in the second round.

Other first round matchups involving East Valley teams:

Div. I

No. 24 Chaparral 47, No. 9 Buena 42:  The Firebirds will face No. 8 Chandler at Chandler on Friday at 8 p.m. in the next round.

Div. II

No. 16 Notre Dame Prep 77, No. 17 Maricopa 61:  The Saints will face No. 1 Bradshaw Mountain on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bradshaw Mountain.

No. 11 Arcadia 47, No. 22 Sabino 36

The Titans will face No. 6 Flowing Wells at 7 p.m. on Friday at Flowing Wells.

No. 10 Campo Verde 66, No. 23 Greenway 46:  The Coyotes will face No. 7 Tucson Sahuaro on Friday at 7 p.m. at Sahuaro.


No. 23 Gilbert Christian 50, No. 10 Thatcher 44:  Colleen Young scored 17 points and Leah Strittmatter added nine points for the visiting Knights. Rebecca Fritts had points and nine rebounds, while Cassidy Curtner added eight points and six rebounds. The Knights will face No. 7 Valley Christian on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Northern Arizona University Walkup Skydome.
