Prep report: Gilbert boys suffer 1st loss in tourney semifinals

The Gilbert High School boys basketball team lost its first game of the season, 66-60, to Laveen César Chavez in the semifinals of the Phoenix Union High School District Holiday Classic on Monday at Gilbert.

The Tigers (10-1) led 56-54 after three quarters but could not hold on despite 16 points from Elliott Clark. Francisco Ahumada added 14 points for Gilbert.

Up next for the Tigers is Diamond Ranch (Calif.) in the third-place game at Phoenix Central High School at 12:30 p.m. today.

César Chavez will face Phoenix North in the tournament's championship game at 8 p.m. today, also at Central.

BOYS BASKETBALL

In other Holiday Classic action, Sam Papa scored 14 points and Jarrett Boykin added 13 as Desert Ridge held off Phoenix Alhambra 72-65 in the semifinals of the consolation bracket at Gilbert High School.

L.C. Williams and Steve Walsh dropped in 11 apiece for the Jaguars (3-7), who will play Hamilton for ninth place at 1:30 p.m. today....

Micah Fetters scored a team-high 20 points to lead Hamilton to a dominating 68-32 win over Phoenix Carl Hayden in the other consolation bracket semifinal game at Central.

Ryan Campos scored10 points for the 5-3 Huskies.
