Prep highlights 11/3: Eagles girls advance in 2A tourney

Scottsdale Christian advanced out of the first round of the 2A girls state volleyball tournament on Tuesday, beating Tonopah Valley in four games, 26-28, 25-11, 25-13, 25-15, at Valley Christian High School.

The Eagles, the No. 16 seed in the 24-team 2A touranment, will face top-seeded Valley Christian on Friday at 3 p.m. at Peoria High School. Another East Valley team, Tempe Prep, fell in the first round, dropping a five-set match to Willcox 23-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-20, 15-5.

Other first-round winners were Greyhills Academy, 3-1 over Phoenix Christian; St. Johns, 3-1 over Phoenix Country Day; Arizona Lutheran, 3-0 over San Manuel; Pusch Ridge, 3-2 over North Pointe; Bourgade Catholic, 3-0 over Valley (Sanders); and Baboquirari, 3-0 over Hayden.

The other East Valley school in the tournament, Horizon Honors, is the No. 4 seed and will take on Arizona Lutheran in the next round.

The second round and quarterfinals will be on Friday, while the semifinals and finals will be Saturday. All remaining matches will be at Peoria High School. …

Third-ranked Desert Mountain beat 5A-II Desert Valley region foe Horizon in four games, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 25-15 to pull even with the Huskies atop the region standings.

With the win, Desert Mountain improved to 6-1 in region and Horizon fell to 6-1.

Paige Picciotti had 10 digs, Natalie Kintz had seven kills and two blocks, and Melissa Hess added 17 kills for No. 4 Horizon (21-17).  …

Krissy Brinkerhoff had 10 kills 18 digs as her Westwood Warriors made a stunning comeback to beat Desert Ridge in five games, 25-16, 15-25, 25-27, 26-24, 15-11.

The Warriors trailed two games to one and were down by 11 points in the fourth game, facing a 17-6 deficit before pulling together and stunning the Jaguars to force a fifth and deciding game.

For Brinkerhoff, it was her seventh double-double of the year. Fellow Warrior Suzanne Morris added 20 kills while teammate Megan Davis threw down 19 of her own.

For Desert Ridge, Talia Jones had 17 kills, three aces, and 15 digs, Calie Schuldt had 13 kills, two aces, and nine digs, and Lexie Crist added four blocks.  …

Mountain Pointe crushed Perry in three games, 25-11, 25-13, 25-10. Annie Uriel and Mikaela Novitsky each had eight kills for the Pride.
