VX girls basketball state tournament roundup 2/15: Desert Mtn., Hamilton, Notre Dame advance

No. 20 Desert Mountain had a steep hill to climb, Wednesday, on the road versus No. 13 Goodyear Millennium, but when all was said and done, the Wolves upset the Tigers, 43-40, to advanced to the next round of the Division I girls basketball state tournament.

With the win, Desert Mountain will get a shot at host and No. 4-seed Peoria Tolleson at 7 p.m. Friday.

On the road at No. 16 Tucson, No. 17 Xavier took down the Badgers, 62-47. The Gators will move on and play at No. 1-seed Mountain View on Friday at 7 p.m.

No. 12 Hamilton took care of business at home in defeating No. 21 Centennial, 63-43. The Huskies will travel to No. 5 Red Mountain on Friday night.

No. 10 Pinnacle took care of No. 23 Alhambra, 82-55, to move on to the second round of the Division I State Tournament. The Pioneers will be looking for the upset when they travel to No. 7 Dobson on Friday.

No. 9 Avondale Westview beat visiting No. 24 Basha, 60-44, and knocked the Bears out of the state tourney. No. 8 Chandler will host the Knights in the second round Friday at 7 p.m.

No. 2 Highland will host No. 15 Sierra Vista Buena on Friday at 7 p.m.

Division II

Playing in front of its home crowd, No. 13 Notre Dame beat No. 20 Campo Verde, 50-39, and advanced to the second round of the Division II girls basketball state tournament.

The Saints will get a chance to play the quasi-underdog role Friday when they visit No. 4 Bradshaw Mountain at 7 p.m.

No. 2 Saguaro will play host to no. 15 Dysart, Friday at 7 p.m.

Division III

No. 15 Gilbert Christian outlasted No. 18 Round Valley, 50-43, to move on to the second round of the Division III basketball state tournament.

The Knights will face an even tougher task, Friday, when they matchup with defending champion and No. 2-seeded Valley Christian at 6 p.m. in the NAU Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.
