Gilbert 5, Mesquite 2: Senior captain Tiffanee Frampton pitched a complete-game, three-hitter as No. 5 Gilbert advanced to the third round of the loser’s bracket with a 5-2 win over No. 9 Mesquite.

The Tigers (24-11), who were upset by 12th-ranked Desert Mountain in the first round, have shown they are passed their early round misstep by winning two straight games by a combined score of 17-2.

Domi Shone went the distance for the Wildcats (23-11) and Desrae Gonzalez and Kendall Kritzik each got one hit apiece.

Gilbert will next face top-seeded Red Mountain in a battle of two high seeds upset in the first round.

Corona del Sol 11, Highland 3: Vanessa Alvarez had a monster night, slamming two home runs, collecting five hits total, and driving in four runs as Corona del Sol upset No. 7 Highland 11-3.

Alvarez hit a three-run shot in the fourth and a solo bomb in the sixth to go along with two singles and a double in five at-bats. Sara Wright went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI for the 11th-seeded Aztecs (11-12), and Jamie Pollak struck out 10 batters in a complete game effort.

Kristen Gonzales went 1-for-3 with a double and Aly Slaughter drove in a run for the Hawks (21-14).

Corona will battle Salpointe in the next round.

Salpointe 5, Dobson 1: The 10th-ranked Mustangs fell short in their attempt to make a major-upset and move on to the third round of the loser’s bracket. Dobson, who finished the season 21-11, was appearing in its first state playoff game since 2005.

5A-II

Pinnacle 1, Horizon 0: Jenna Makis pitched a complete-game shutout and her battery mate, Amy Hallett, drove in the game’s only run at Pinnacle beat region foe Horizon 1-0.

Hallett hit a two-out double with a runner on second in the first inning to give Pinnacle the lead and no runner crossed the plate after.

Makis struck out four batters and gave up six hits for the Pioneers (22-12) while her counterpart, Jessica Green, pitched a complete game five-hitter to take the loss for Horizon (22-11).

The two evenly matched teams had nearly identical records, with each beating the other once in regular-season Pima Region play. Pinnacle will next face Skyline, a team the Pioneers are 2-0 against this season, on Saturday.

Skyline 2, Ironwood 1: Jenny Willis hit an RBI single in the sixth and Reba DePriest pitched a complete-game shutout as the 10th-ranked Coyotes beat No. 11 Ironwood 2-1 in the loser’s brackets of the double-elimination tournament.

Willis lined a single with runners and second and third to break the scoreless tie and Lisa Gomez followed with an RBI single of her own to give the Coyotes the 2-0 advantage.

DePriest allowed just four hits and struck out 11 batters, her second straight complete-game with 10 or more strikeouts.

Skyline (19-10), whose back-to-back tournament victories were the first two state tournament wins in school history, again extended its school single-season win record, previously 13. The Coyotes will next try to avenge two regular-season losses against Pima Region rival Pinnacle.
