Pedersen leads Mtn. Lions over Hawks

Kayla Pedersen put up a doubledouble with 23 points and 12 rebounds in host Red Mountain’s 73-50 win over Highland (6-2) Thursday in a 5A nonregion girls basketball game.

Bonnie Barbee and Deanna Reich added 18 and 12 points, respectively for the Mountain Lions (2-0).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Skyline improved to 7-0 for the first time in school history by defeating visiting Apache Junction 47-39 in a nonregion game.

“It’s exciting,” Skyline coach Patrick Dunn said. “The girls are having a great time. There’s a big buzz going around school.”

The Coyotes were led by Erinn Goodman’s 16 points. Jez Wells and Hannah Herrera scored 12 each for the Prospectors. . . .

Tori Sheaffer scored 21 points as Horizon beat visiting Pinnacle 65-55 in a nonconference girls basketball game. Michelle Berry led Pinnacle with 17 points. . . .

McClintock’s Stefanee Perez scored a game-high 21 points in the Chargers’ 56-51 victory over Mesa. Amy Patton recorded 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds for McClintock. . . .

Kayli Cashman had 21 points as host Basha beat Chandler 69-55 in a 5A nonregion game. Cashman hit 13-of-14 free throws in the second half to help seal the win and Briana Benjamin and Kaela Oakes added 13 points each for the Bears (2-0). Ashley Brown led the Wolves (1-1) with 19 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Matt Rhodes poured in 28 points and Nick Witherill contributed 23 in Saguaro’s 80-70 win over visiting Desert Mountain.

Steven Morin added 13 points for the Sabercats (6-1).

Kyle Smith and Pat Macinan scored 17 and 16, respectively to pace the Wolves. . . .

Mickey McConnell scored a game-high 24 points in Dobson’s 69-51 win over Corona del Sol, the Mustangs’ first win of the season. . . .

Aaron Benson and Andy Almond each scored 10 points to lead Tempe Prep (3-1) over Salome, 58-33, in the opener of the Desert Classic tournament at Phoenix Country Day.

Manny Sandoval scored 17 points in the Knights’ second game of pool play, but it wasn’t enough as host Phoenix Country Day downed Tempe Prep, 57-36. . . .

With no time left on the clock, Basha’s Nick Markovich hit a jumper to beat Chandler 62-61. Eli Godinez recorded 21 points for the Wolves. . . .

Alex English scored 22 points and Chris McFaul added 20 as Paradise Valley beat host Phoenix North 64-56 in a 5A nonregion game. Jevon Jones added 14 points for the Trojans (6-1). . . .

Host Valley Christian was 2-for-2 on the day in the Valley Christian Invitational, first defeating Thatcher 80-44 in the afternoon, then disposing of Kearny Ray in the evening 82-48.

Bryan Avant scored in double figures in both games (10 in Game 1 and 16 in Game 2) to lift Valley Christian. . . .

Trailing Seton Catholic by 15 entering the fourth quarter, Pusch Ridge got a steal and a layup by Jordan Van Keuren with 15 seconds left to beat the Sentinels 64-63.

James Ardnt led Seton with 19 points while Michael Barlow chipped in with 10.

BOYS SOCCER

Luis Lopez scored two of Tempe’s three second-half goals and the Buffaloes (2-0-1) beat Flagstaff Sinagua 3-0 to advance to the final of the Alliance Tournament in Prescott. . . .

Andrew and Brandon Brown each scored a goal and Jim Wholsey added a third in visiting Horizon’s 3-1 victory over Glendale Mountain Ridge. . . .

Hamilton beat Desert Vista in a 5A-II nonregion game. The Huskies won in a shootout, 4-3, after the teams finished two overtimes tied 1-1.

Sean MacNabb scored the first goal of the match midway through the second overtime. Kerel Bradford then tied the game with less then a minute left. . . .

Marcus Barbaro scored two of Desert Mountain’s (1-1) four goals in the first half to help lead the Wolves to a 5-1 win over Phoenix Central. . . .

Tempe Prep got help from an owngoal by Phoenix Bourgade and beat the Golden Eagles (0-2) 2-1 in a nonconference game. Daniel Presson scored the other goal for Knights (1-0).

GIRLS SOCCER

In a 5-0 shutout over Sahuarita, Seton Catholic’s Shannon Desmond netted two goals and recorded an assist in their first game of the year. . . .

Andrea Alley and Kaitlin O’Neill scored three goals apiece as visiting Valley Christian beat Scottsdale Christian 7-2 in a 2A Metro Region game. Katie Gaab added a goal for the Trojans (1-0, 1-0).
