Tribune softball rankings as of April 1:

Division I

1. Basha

2. Red Mountain

3. Horizon

4. Mountain View

5. Mountain Ridge

6. Desert Ridge

7. Perry

8. Xavier

9. Gilbert

10. Mountain Pointe

The top remains rock solid with Basha and Red Mountain remaining unbeaten recently, including the Bears’ win over Gilbert followed by a 4-0 victory over amped-up Perry late last week behind an excellent pitching performance from Lynea Klemmedson. Those two schools meet again on Tuesday at Perry H.S. Mountain View won against Desert Ridge and Desert Mountain to bolster its power rankings, but in a rarity the Toros move down a spot because Horizon moves up on account of a terrific showing in winning the Desert Mountain tournament, and the competition faced in doing so. The bottom half of the rankings, however, features a mini-shakeup. Perry slips one spot to No. 7 after losing to Basha, while the Pumas can make up ground again with Basha this week and Desert Ridge (twice) next week. Xavier lost to Mountain Pointe to drop a spot, while the Gators are off the rest of this week on Spring Break. Those defeats plus Gilbert beating Desert Ridge (after the Tigers lost to Basha) last week allows Mountain Ridge to move up two spots after it hammered Centennial. Chaparral’s loss to Desert Mountain last week drops the Firebirds out of the rankings for the moment, and Mountain Pointe squeaks in barely over Desert Mountain for the No. 10 spot on account of a few quality wins this season (Centennial, Desert Ridge, Xavier). The Pride, however, face Mountain Ridge on Monday (April 1) and Corona del Sol on Wednesday.

Division II

1. Sunrise Mountain

2. Canyon del Oro

3. Greenway

4. Raymond S. Kellis

5. Verrado

Sunrise Mountain strong in Sandra Day O’Connor softball tournament last week, and CDO also won out since the end of the Desert Mountain tournament. It sets up a showdown on Tuesday between CDO and Ironwood Ridge (which falls after being crushed by Marana last week). Greenway stays put while riding a seven-game winning streak, but it faces Cactus Shadows, Liberty and Paradise Valley this week, so the Demons get an uptick in competition. Verrado wins an arguably exhausting battle for the No. 5 spot for now, and Division II’s depth is on display with how many teams can make a legitimate claim for any of the bottom couple of spots (Sahuaro, Desert Edge, Seton Catholic, Paradise Valley, Flagstaff, etc.).

Division III

1. Winslow

2. Estrella Foothills

3. Empire

4. Benson

5. Morenci

Benson falls two spots to No. 4 after losing to Estrella Foothills in late March, though its won out since then. Estrella moves up two spots and Empire moves up one spot after Empire held on against bigger schools and top competition from California and Las Vegas at the Spring Jamboree tournament in California last week, while Morenci won out to stay at No. 5. Winslow and Payson are deservedly neck-and-neck to be the next ones to crack the top 5 if a team slips again.

Division IV

1. NW Christian

2. AZ Lutheran

3. Valley Christian

4. Phoenix Christian

5. St. Johns

Bigger shakeup here as AZ Lutheran and St. Johns both lost in the past 10 days, so NW Christian moves up to No. 1 for now, while AZ Lutheran stays ahead of Valley Christian (even after VC just beat Tempe Prep) having beaten the Trojans earlier in the season. The two teams play each other again on Monday (April 1). St. Johns falls to No. 5 and Tempe Prep falls out of the rankings (for the moment) because of the respective losses, and Phoenix Christian moves in at No. 4 on its strength of schedule (relative to Div. IV) and with its only loss in the last three weeks coming in a tournament.
