Region roundup: Schelling leads Lions to title

Defending state and region champion Kristen Schelling of Mesa Red Mountain shot 13-under and again claimed the 5A-I East Valley Region individual golf championship with a score of 139 on Wednesday at Viewpoint Golf Resort in Mesa.

Red Mountain placed first overall with a team score of 661, with Mesa Dobson four strokes behind at 665. Mesa Mountain View (760) was third, and Mesa Westwood (876) edged Mesa (877) by a stroke to claim the fourth qualifying spot for the state tournament. In addition to the the top four teams, individuals Kiki Sterns of Laveen Cesar Chavez and Maria Morales of Phoenix Trevor Browne also advanced to state.


Apache Junction senior Billy Pritchard shot a 141 and was crowned the individual champion of the East Sky Region tournament at Apache Creek Golf Course in Apache Junction.

The Prospectors tied with Phoenix Arcadia for first overall with a team score of 623. The pair was followed by Queen Creek (659), Gilbert Higley (660), Scottsdale Coronado (714) and Tempe (DNS).

Arcadia's Chad Fogg placed second individually with a 148.

In addition to the top two teams, five other individual golfers also qualified for the state championships — Shane Yoon and Jordan Lowery of Queen Creek, Kyle Swisher and Mike Fitch of Higley and Mike Lloyd of Coronado.

On the girls side, Queen Creek's Kimberly Kim shot 12-under for the two-day tournament and won the regional title at Las Colinas Golf Course in Queen Creek with an overall score of 130.

Cave Creek Cactus Shadows was crowned the team champion with a score of 597. Scottsdale Notre Dame was second with 669, followed by Queen Creek at 720.

Esther Choe of Cactus Shadows shot a 134 and placed second while Lauren Weaver shot a 2-over 144 and finished third.

By placing first and second, Cactus Shadows and Notre Dame advanced to the state championships along with individuals Mandy Gregg and Sara Lichstinn of Arcadia, Alexa Koba of Tempe and Amanda Paceley of Higley.



Richard Lee shot 7-under par and led Chandler Hamilton to a first-place lead with a score of 277 after one day at a 5A-I super regional at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix.

Tucson Salpointe is in second place with a score of 279, followed by Mesa Red Mountain (283), Phoenix Brophy (286) and Sierra Vista Buena (289). Twelve golfers finished under par, including Andrew Yun of Chandler Hamilton and Trent Sanders of Brophy, who each shot a 68 and are tied with two others for third place. Today's second round begins at 9:30 a.m. at Cave Creek Golf Course.



Paradise Valley's Nathan Nissle shot a 78 and the Trojans sit in ninth place, with a score of 364, after the first day of the southern super regional at Tucson's Randolph Golf Course.



Tatum Jestila had 17 kills, four aces, 15 digs and a block as Scottsdale Notre Dame downed visiting Cave Creek Cactus Shadows to advance to the 4A-II Wells Fargo 2 championship match.

The Saints' (32-10) Chelsey Thompson had 10 kills and seven digs and teammate Rebecca Slegers had five kills, three blocks and two aces. Notre Dame will face Phoenix Sunnyslope for the region championship tonight at Sunnyslope.


Sam Hatch of Gilbert placed first with a score of 417.65 and clinched the 5A-I Fiesta Region championship at Chandler High School. Gilbert Highland's Greg Lords scored a 384.20 to finish second, followed by teammate Tyler Lovell (326.95) in third.

On the girls side, Gilbert's Katie Joedicker finished first with a score of 296.85. Ashley Ferguson of Chandler Hamilton was second with a score of 294.80 and teammate Cierra Santiago took third with 286.40.
