Webb scores two goals as Higley girls soccer team beats Coconino to run winning streak to 27 games

GIRLS SOCCER

In a rematch of last year’s 4A Division II state final, Higley ran its win streak to 27 games with a 2-0 win over Flagstaff Coconino behind two goals from last season’s state scoring leader Danica Webb. The Knights’ defense got an allaround team effort led by defenders

Blakele Bergman, Millie Riter, Sam Winfrey and Kristin Yosick. The quartet spearheaded the shutout for the undefeated Knights.

BOYS SOCCER

After going 0-10 last year Higley got its first win this season, defeating visiting Coconino 3-1 in double overtime of a Class 4A nonregion game.

Sophomore David Yitts tied the game in the second half for the Knights (1-2), and then in the first overtime Fernando Mata put them ahead for good with a long range kick.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Maurice Jackson hit the gamewinning shot with one second left on a 15-foot jumper as visiting Gilbert beat Red Mountain 64-63 in overtime. Jackson and Daryl Clarke finished with 13 points apiece for the Tigers. … Aaron Fuller scored 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead Mesa to a 67-63 home victory over Paradise Valley.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kayla Pedersen scored 31 points as Red Mountain (3-0) beat host Gilbert (6-3) 88-70.

CORRECTION

Tuesday’s high school notebook should have mentioned Phoenix Brophy senior offensive and defensive lineman Blake Behrens was a two-time all-state selection and three-time All-Desert Valley Region pick.
