If Scottsdale Christian is going to go where it wants to, Jacob Storrer will be the one to make it happen.
It was the Eagles who narrowly won the 2A Central Region championship over Chandler Valley Christian and Phoenix Northwest Christian, but they tumbled in the first round of the playoffs to Bisbee, on the heels beating Valley Christian to close the regular season a week prior.
Of course, this singular feat isn’t just Storrer’s responsibility or burden, as the senior quarterback had nearly 600 yards passing, nine touchdowns and six interceptions, and more than 1,000 yards rushing last year.
Asking for more production in his second year as the starter, however, isn’t unthinkable.
“It’s hard to have a high benchmark for success without an experienced quarterback,” coach Jeff Fox said. “He’s got tremendous talent around him and that makes it pretty exciting. He’s someone to take charge and that’s what you want in a QB.”
Again, the running game will be this team’s bread-and-butter. Ryan Tully totaled nearly 1,400 total yards last season, but has since graduated.
Backup quarterback Jeff Matney gets the first crack as the starter in the backfield, with help from speedster Taylor Barnes, who’s back on the football team after only playing baseball last year.
But there’s hope the Eagles can be a two-trick pony when necessary.
“We don’t want to lose focus on what we pride ourselves in,” Fox said. “To be balanced and score points is the objective and if we have to do it through the air, we will.”
The biggest help of all, however, will be Michael Munsil, a three-year, two-way starter who returns for his senior season after leading 2A with 112 total tackles.
Did we mention he’s a lineman?
With most of an experienced offensive line returning, Storrer has the weapons surrounding him to make a push far deeper into the playoffs, a motivation for this group after being left out in the cold last November.
“We can go further with this group,” Fox said. “It’s what we’ve grown to expect here, but there are a lot of variables left to figure out. It’s the small things you have to do well and we don’t want to leave those facets unturned.”
