Statistics don’t lie, but they don’t always tell the whole story.

Averaging 7.5 kills per game, Chandler Valley Christian’s Chanel Brown led the state and was ranked third in the nation.

Her .427 hitting percentage was the 31st best in the country. She averaged 4.5 digs, had 54 aces, and so on and so on…

But, the 5-foot-10 junior, already with more than 20-plus offers from Division I colleges, is more than just a player that fills up a box score.

“She had a tremendous season,” Valley Christian coach Molly Stark said. “She carried our team.”

It’s the leadership category where Brown gets her finest marks. She not only leads by example, she just flat out leads.

“She has it all. She’s the complete package,” Stark added.

Stark can hit, as her numbers state emphatically, she can play defense, she can serve and she can even set when needed.

When asked her thoughts on her biggest asset to her team, Brown said, “I think what sticks out most about my game is my leadership and how much I want to win and how hard I play every point.”

Great talent plus great effort equals a great player.

“At the high school level she’s a rarity,” Stark said. “At the club level you may see several players like that, but at the high school level it’s not as common to have all those skills.”

Brown has already accomplished a lot in her high school career. She said the only thing missing is a state championship. Valley Christian has two semifinals and a quarterfinal appearance during Brown’s three years. She is hopeful, with only one senior graduating from this season’s semifinal team, that a title will complete her career.

“I play for an amazing team, and each and every one of us has the desire and passion to succeed,” Brown said. “I still think we can do it next year.”

Then it’s on to new goals.

“I want to have a state championship when I go to college and lead my team to a national championship,” she said.

That would be a complete package.
