Athlete of the week
Whitney Lopus: The Desert Mountain senior helped her team end Phoenix Xavier’s 23-year dual meet winning streak by swimming on the “B” relay team to help Desert Mountain score more points.
The next day, she won the 100 freestyle and butterfly events at the Scottsdale school district meet and pulled off the same double at the Nike Invitational in Tucson against the state’s top swimmers.

Several swimmers will take momentum into the 4A-I Desert Sky and 4A-II East Sky regional swim meets this weekend at McClintock Pool. Tempe McClintock’s Rachael Ripley is coming off a win in the 50 freestyle at the Tempe city meet. Scottsdale Chaparral’s Sarah Cox won the 50 free at the Scottsdale city meet in a time just a shade under Ripley’s which should make for a great spotlight race.
On the boys side, Cave Creek Cactus Shadows’ Rod Preston was eighth at the Nike meet in the 100 free. Chaparral junior Tudor Florea is coming off a win in the 200 individual medley at the Scottsdale district meet and Phoenix Arcadia’s medley relay team and senior Michael Zoldos (200 free) also won at the Scottsdale city meet. Arcadia senior Lindsey Stevens won the same event and is looking to defend her state title.
National honors: Five locals made the USA Swimming National Junior Team. Tempe Corona del Sol sprinter Adam Small joins Mesa Dobson’s Traycie Swartz, Phoenix Desert Vista’s Katie Olsen, Phoenix Pinnacle’s Ashley Evans and Xavier’s Haley Krakoski.
They’ll compete against host Australia, Canada and Japan in Melbourne in January.
Regional time: 4A Desert Sky, East Sky and Black Canyon regionals, today and Saturday.
