Mountain Pointe goalkeeper Ryan Bowie stopped three penalty kicks Saturday morning to help the Pride defeat Corona del Sol in penalty kicks and a mini-playoff prep soccer game at Marcos de Niza High School.
Bowie’s third rejection — stopping an Anson Cain shot — allowed Mountain Pointe a 3-2 advantage in penalty kicks and earned the Pride (15-3-1) the top seed from the Central Region at next week’s state tournament.
The teams, who tied for the Central Region title with 7-1 records, played to a scoreless tie after two 20-minute halves. Corona del Sol (15-4-1) is the region’s No. 2 seed and plays host at 6 p.m. Monday to a first-round game against Mesa. Mountain Pointe earned a first-round bye and plays at home at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Monday’s Yuma Cibola-Sierra Vista Buena winner.
Corona del Sol goalkeeper Eric Reingen and teammate Kyle Stoll converted penalty kicks, as did Mountain Pointe’s Peter Kierstead and Colin Hildebrand for a 2-2 score after two rounds of penalty kicks. Bowie then stopped kicks by Dave Oberholtzer, Eric Turner and Cain in succession. Reingen deflected an attempt by the Pride’s leading scorer, Brad Evans, but couldn't stop Marshall Young’s shot for what proved to be the difference.
