Prep highlights: Desert Vista sweeps Tempe swim titles

Phoenix Desert Vista won both the boys and girls swimming competition at the Tempe City Meet at Tempe McClintock High School Thursday.

In the boys competition, Desert Vista (365.5) beat Tempe Corona del Sol (356.5), Phoenix Mountain Pointe (240), Mc-Clintock (220), Tempe Marcos de Niza (153) and Tempe High (30). Adam Small of Desert Vista broke the 50-yard freestyle city record with a time of 21:08 seconds. Corona broke its own meet record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.22.

In the girls competition, Desert Vista (374.5) beat Corona del Sol (303.5), Mountain Pointe (255), McClintock (231), Marcos de Niza (174) and Tempe (4). The Thunder girls won seven of the 12 events.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Kelsee Goodman took the 50 and 100 freestyle events as Skyline defeated Basha 98-86 in a 5A meet at Skyline.

Katie Tomlinson and Traycie Swartz each won two events for host Dobson as it defeated Red Mountain 108-68 at Powell Jr. High School. Cori Diener won two events for the Mountain Lions.

BOYS GOLF

Highland won the Gilbert City Tournament at Toka Sticks Golf Course with a team total of 395. Mesa Desert Ridge was second at 419, followed by Gilbert (427) and Mesquite (475). Highland’s Tyler Bielenberg won the individual title with a 34.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Kat Highmark had 14 kills and 11 assists to lead Chaparral (21-4, 5-1) over Apache Junction, 25-9, 25-6, 25-12 on the road. Abbey Wither added 10 kills and 11 assists for the Firebirds.

Shiann Fraley had eight kills to help visiting Cactus Shadows defeat Paradise Valley 25-10, 25-20, 25-12. Kelsey Janke had 15 digs and Sammy Geiger added 25 assists for the Falcons.

Molly Barlow had 21 kills as visiting Seton Catholic beat Tempe High, 25-17, 25-20, 25-19, in a 4A-II East Sky Region match. Bailey Abele added 15 kills for the Sentinels (11-1, 7-0).

Chelsey Thompson had 12 kills to help Notre Dame (16-2, 5-0) knock off visiting Phoenix Greenway, 25-12, 25-15, 25-11. Sarah Svorinic added 32 assists for the Saints.

Visiting Desert Mountain won a battle with Glendale Mountain Ridge, 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, 16-14, in a 5A-I Desert Valley Region match. The Wolves (10-10-1, 2-3) were led by Taylor Jones, who had 37 assists.

Chanel Brown had 19 kills and 12 digs and Alaina Bergsma had 16 kills as Valley Christian (17-4, 11-1) beat Scottsdale Christian on the road, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19. Tori Gentry added 38 assists for the Trojans. Lenna Madden, Taylor Stephens and Betsy Bull had six kills apiece to lead the Eagles (17-7, 5-4).

Melissa Toth had 18 kills and six digs, as Arcadia, which is No. 2 in the 4A-II power points, defeated Peoria, which was No. 2 in the 4A-I power points 3-0 at Peoria.
