After winning three consecutive state titles in the West Valley, Mark Nold is heading east.
Nold will be the first boys basketball coach at the new Chandler Perry High School this fall. He accepted the position Tuesday.
Nold was hired away from Glendale Apollo, where he coached the past six seasons and led the Hawks to three consecutive 4A state titles, the past two 4A-I championships.
Now, it’s time for something new.
“I think it’s a unique chance to go out and start a program from the ground level,” Nold said. “That area of town is a gold mine.”
Nold grew up on the west side of Phoenix and spent seven years as an assistant at Phoenix Moon Valley, helping coach Richard Jefferson to a state title in 1998.
Nold, who will move his family to the East Valley this summer, will be a guidance counselor at Perry.
Though starting a program is a far different venture from the resurrection he led at Apollo, he doesn’t want to wait long to win. “It’s a new challenge ahead of us,” he said. “We’re going to try and get there as quick as possible by doing things the right way on and off the court.”
