01/28 - Soccer roundup: Tempe gets by Saguaro at regionals

Sergio Hernandez had a goal and an assist as Tempe topped Saguaro 2-1 in double overtime of their boys 4A East Sky Regional soccer playoff on Tuesday at Tempe.

Tempe will enter the state tournament no worse than a No. 2 seed. On Thursday, Saguaro will host Arcadia for third place and Tempe will face Chaparral in the championship game.

ARCADIA 6, CORONADO 1: The host Titans (9-4-1) scored six unanswered goals in the second half, four of them within two minutes, to defeat the visiting Dons in a 4A East Sky Region playoff game.

MOUNTAIN POINTE 5, YUMA 1: Paul Kierstead scored four goals for the Pride as they defeated the visiting Criminals in the 5A Central Region playoffs.

The Pride will face Marcos de Niza on Thursday for the region title.

DESERT VISTA 2, MARCOS DE NIZA 1: Michael Glenn scored the winning goal in overtime as the Thunder defeated the host Padres to clinch at least second place in the 5A Central Region tournament.

Steven Gloria scored a goal for the Padres.

DESERT MOUNTAIN 3, PHOENIX NORTH CANYON 0: Carson Krieg and Alex Lowen had breakaway goals and Kenji Ikematsu scored on a penalty kick as the host Wolves (7-8-4) downed the Rattlers in the 5A Desert Valley Region tournament.

Desert Mountain plays Phoenix Brophy today at Paradise Valley High School in a region semifinal.


DESERT VISTA 6, MARCOS DE NIZA 0: Jen Christoffers scored three goals to lead the Thunder past the visiting Padres in a 5A Central Region playoff game.

Lea Mackinnon added one goal and two assists for the Thunder, who clinched second place in the region.

DESERT MOUNTAIN 9, PARADISE VALLEY 0: Stefanie Marasco led all scorers with three goals and gave an assist as the host Wolves defeated the Trojans in the 5A Desert Valley regional tournament.

Haley Hart added two goals and an assist for the Wolves and Liz Herber earned her 10th shutout.

Desert Mountain will play Horizon on Thursday at Phoenix Xavier in a region semifinal.
