Valerie Kaff was dominant and led the Mountain View softball team to a 3-1 victory over Desert Mountain in a pitchers' duel.

Kaff went the distance and struck out a season-high 18 Wolves.

The Toros offense was led by Page Roberts, who had an RBI double, and Kinsey Ryan added a single and an RBI.

The other run scored when pinch-runner Brooke Hills scored from third base on a passed ball.

Baseball

Saguaro 16, Coronado 6:  The Sabercats used a 13-run third inning to overtake Coronado 16-6 on Wednesday. The Sabercats got three hits from junior Brett Adams and senior Shane Stansbury, and two each from juniors Turner Lace, Matt Mara and Jack Jeffries. Saguaro piled up 15 hits and seven walks to do the damage. Senior Dom Bergs went five innings to gain the win, striking out 6 in the effort. Savoy Harney had two hits to lead Coronado. Saguaro takes on Arcadia at Grand Canyon Univ. on Thursday at 7 p.m. on Cox (Ch. 7).

Girls Tennis

Basha 5, Chandler 4: For the first time the school that Eddie Basha helped found defeated his alma mater in tennis. Chandler was coming off a tight victory over Perry, and, despite losing 2 of their top 3 players from 2012, has a young team with a lot of potential. Sophomore Julia Ortiz is one of the top players in the East Valley, only losing to Hamilton in singles so far this year. Basha was playing without its regular No. 4 starter, which meant it had to move the bottom three players each up a slot and alter our No. 3 doubles team. Briley Rucker won a huge third-set tiebreaker in singles to even the match at 3-3 going into doubles. The star of the match was Basha's No. 2, Jewel Brundrett, with a singles victory (6-1, 6-1) and then teaming with captain Luz Garcia to win the decisive doubles match, 9-7.
