Desert Ridge stayed close but couldn’t get over the top Tuesday and finished second in a 5A Division II super regional at Maryvale Golf Course.
Anthem Boulder Creek, paced by medalist Scott Pinckey’s 6-under-par 138, edged Desert Ridge by three shots to win the 13-team event.
Boulder Creek shot a 36-hole score of 602. Finishing third was Peoria Centennial (631). Paradise Valley managed an eighth-place finish at 654, just good enough for its team to qualify for next week’s state tournament that begins Monday at Dobson Ranch. The top eight teams and four individuals not on qualifying teams advance to state.
Desert Ridge placed three players in the top 10 led by runner-up Justin Searles. Searles finished at 2-over par for the tournament. Jon Brewer (148) was fourth and Chris Shoop (151) took sixth.
Wade Henry, who was in the top 10 after the first round for the Jaguars after shooting a 76, was disqualified from Tuesday’s round for signing an incorrect scorecard.
"He did sign for a wrong number," Desert Ridge coach Pat Herrera confirmed.
"You have to follow the rules. Luckily this wasn’t the state tournament. We played well, and this tournament was to qualify. We’re looking forward to next week."
The top golfer for Paradise Valley was Tyler Chatam, who shot 159.
