Two football coaching changes have already taken place at the varsity level in the Gilbert school district for next year.

Now the district has a third opening in boys basketball in a span of three weeks.

Gilbert High coach David Loutzenheiser resigned Tuesday to pursue other opportunities, perhaps in administration. Desert Ridge coach Brad Little did not have his coaching contract renewed after the season ended. Highland coach Jon Shaw resigned late last week.

Loutzenheiser was the coach for three years beginning with the 2004-05 season after succeeding Tom Bennett. Gilbert compiled a 58-29 record the last three campaigns (all winning seasons) under Loutzenheiser and qualified for state each year. The Tigers were eliminated in the first round each year. The past two seasons, Laveen Cesar Chavez ended their seasons. Loutzenheiser coached at Gilbert in the boys program in one capacity or another the last 10 years.

Little was coach at Desert Ridge the last three seasons, posting a 10-67 mark. Desert Ridge is about to begin interviewing to replace Little. Highland and Gilbert will begin in a couple of weeks.

Chandler Seton Catholic is also working on hiring a boys basketball coach. Athletic director Rick Miles said the post is open and the school will go through the formal hiring procedures. In September 2006, longtime coach Hosea Graham stepped down and was replaced on an interim basis by Ernie Pintor, who guided the Sentinels to a 20-10 mark and a spot in the 3A quarterfinals.

Miles said Pintor will apply for the job, but, “We felt it was in our best interest and his that we open it back up and go through the process.

“He has a decided advantage over everybody else.”

Miles said he hoped to have the vacant basketball and football positions filled by the end of April.

Tribune writer Steve Burks contributed to this report.
