A pair of local stars are expected to make their season debuts on Friday.
Chandler wide receiver Dionte Sykes, who missed last Thursday's season opener against Peoria Centennial, said he will play against Sierra Vista Buena. He broke his hand in an early August practice and had it in a cast last week but said he's been cleared.
Sykes had 42 catches for 708 yards and five touchdowns for the Wolves last season. He verbally committed to UCLA over the summer after accumulating multiple BCS-level scholarship offers.
Tempe running back/defensive back Kamron Johnson is expected to make his team debut on Friday against Flagstaff Coconino. Johnson transferred in from Marcos de Niza but was suspended for the opener after getting ejected from a preseason scrimmage.
The Buffaloes escaped with a 16-14 victory but managed only 51 yards rushing on 18 carries. Johnson had 22 carries for 266 yards and three touchdowns last season as a sophomore with Marcos de Niza. He also had 265 yards receiving.
Tempe has been heavily pass-oriented for the past year with star quarterback Emanuel Gant at the helm, but Johnson should help balance out the offense.
Correction: The original story incorrectly stated Johnson missed Tempe's opener because of eligibility issues pertaining to his transfer.
