Prep Roundup 1/4: Highland boys hoops upset Basha

Highland held on to beat host Basha 58-56 in its 5A-I Central region boys basketball opener on Tuesday night. Jake Toolson and Connor Toolson each scored 11 points for the Hawks (6-7, 1-0).

Jaron Hopkins led the Bears (8-6, 0-1) with 20 points. Torren Jones had a double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds.

In other boys basketball action,  Jordan Baker finished with 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals to lead host Tempe past Coronado 75-42 in a 4A II East Sky region game. Isaiah Haynes added 15 points for the Buffaloes (11-5, 2-2). Alain Martinez led the Dons with 18 points.

Boys Soccer

Notre Dame Prep shut out host Tempe, 2-0, in a 4A-II East Sky region game. Taylor Scott scored 3 minutes into the second half for the Saints (4-0).

Ricardo Boggs scored the second goal to seal the win with 12 minutes remaining. Tempe dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Jairo Salazar scored three goals as host Westwood beat Cesar Chavez 5-2 in a 5A I non region match. Jacobo Guillermo scored both goals for Cesar Chavez.

Girls Basketball

Bri Cook had 22 points, eight steals and seven assists in McClinotck's 70-11 win over Combs in a 4A-I Desert Sky region game. Brittany Dent added 10 points for the Chargers.
