03/01 - Desert Mountain edges St. Mary's

Desert Mountain High School's Alexia Garcia drove in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning as the Wolves beat Phoenix St. Mary's, 5-4, Friday in the Lion Country Classic softball tournament.

Jenny Lewis and Tiffany Andras each hit two-run homers for Desert Mountain (1-1), and Montana Banks pitched four innings of relief to get the win.

In other Lion Country Classic games:

SAGUARO 3, MCCLINTOCK 1: Terra Westlake allowed four hits in the Sabercats' season-opening win over the Chargers. Allison Pease went 2-for-3 with a two-run double for Saguaro. Martina Marin was 3-for-3 for McClintock.

CHAPARRAL 7, MCCLINTOCK 1: The Firebirds' Erica Bailey pitched a complete game and belted a three-run homer against the Chargers (0-2). Jennifer Tomlinson drove in the lone run for McClintock.

RED MOUNTAIN 9, TEMPE 1: Alyssa Ingram went 3-for-4 to lead the host Mountain Lions (2-0) over the Buffaloes. Amanda Taylor threw a complete-game three-hitter for the victory, and Jessica Cannon went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs for Red Mountain.

RED MOUNTAIN 9, DESERT MOUNTAIN 0: Cassie Forsyth struck out 14 in a complete-game shutout as the host Mountain Lions (1-0) topped the Wolves. Katie Garman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Alyssa Ingram had three hits and an RBI for Red Mountain.

DOBSON-HIGHLAND INVITATIONAL

DOBSON 7, CHANDLER 2: Felicia Coffey went 3-for-4 with a double and pitched a complete game as the host Mustangs (1-3) topped the Wolves. Christina Douglas added two triples and Ashley Schroeder went 2-for-4 with a double for Dobson.

PHOENIX NORTH CANYON 11, CHANDLER 1: Holly Kellog went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as the Rattlers (3-0) beat the Wolves in pool play of the Dobson-Highland Tournament at Highland.

GILBERT 10, DOBSON 3: Kristina Hernandez pitched a complete game, allowing three runs and striking out six as the Tigers defeated the Mustangs in the Highland-Dobson Invitational. Becca Quinones went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Mikkela Jasken was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

GILBERT 3, MARCOS DE NIZA 1: Kori Bowser pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits to lead the Tigers over the visiting Padres in the Dobson-Highland Invitational. Rhoenita Yancy went 2-for-3 and Ashley Yeager went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Mikkela Jasken went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

HAMILTON 2, GLENDALE IRONWOOD 0: Katie Adkins hurled a three-hit shutout to lead the host Huskies (2-2) over the Eagles. Brandy Araiza had three hits and knocked in both runs for Hamilton.

HIGHLAND 12, WESTWOOD 4: Justine Pineda went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI to lead the host Hawks past the Warriors. Megan Fasulo added a triple and three RBIs for Highland. Malia Simmons went 2-for-4 with a triple to lead Westwood.

GLENDALE IRONWOOD 4, HIGHLAND 0: Sara Mulligan and Lindsay McHenry each had two hits in a losing effort for the Hawks as the Eagles blanked them in the Dobson-Highland Invitational.

NON-TOURNAMENT GAMES

MESQUITE 15, MOUNTAIN VIEW 2: Jenna DiGuiseppe hit a three-run homer as the host Wildcats (2-0) broke open a close game and coasted over the Toros (1-1). Ali Baumhover added a double, triple and two RBIs, and Latasha Hunter had two hits and two RBIs for Mesquite. Carli Jones hit a two-run homer for Mountain View. Earlier in the day, Mountain View beat Tucson Sahuaro, 5-2. Jeni Jadlot went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.

DESERT VISTA 15, YUMA 0: Jill Zinkie blanked the Criminals in four innings as the Thunder won in the Dobson Invitational. Courtney Bruns went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Bri Sloane was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and Meredith Drahota went 2-for-3 in the victory.

DESERT VISTA 9, CASA GRANDE 1: Jill Zinkie pitched five shutout innings and had six strikeouts to lead the host Thunder over the Cougars in a Dorado Invitational game. Jennifer Newman and Meredith Drahota each went 2-for-4 and Colleen Conline was 3-for-4 for Desert Vista.

BASEBALL

CHAPARRAL 13, MARCOS DE NIZA 1: Jason Corley allowed just one run and struck out nine in five innings as the visiting Firebirds (1-0) trounced the Padres (0-1) in the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Invitational. Ryan Davis went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Austin Yount was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Chaparral. Kyle Waller had a solo home run for Marcos.

MARCOS DE NIZA 11, PHOENIX SOUTH MOUNTAIN 1: Joaquin Ruiz held the visiting Jaguars to just one run on four hits in a complete game as the host Padres (1-1) prevailed in the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Invitational. Gabe Gonzales went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Brandon Cruz was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

SKYLINE 7, GLENDALE APOLLO 4: Jeff Christianson and Matt Schultz combined for a no-hitter as the host Coyotes downed the Hawks in the Adam Donnenfield Tournament.

MOUNTAIN POINTE 9, WESTWOOD 0: Brett Fuller, J.J. Sferra and Drew Sampson combined for nine strikeouts and a complete game shutout to lead the Pride over the Warriors in an Aztec Invitational matchup. Sferra went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Jared Dhaenens was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the victory.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 7, PHOENIX SHADOW MOUNTAIN 4: Brad Mills pitched five innings, allowing one run as the Toros defeated the Matadors in a Desert Vista Invitational matchup. Rhett Pritchard went 2-for-5 with a home run, and Andy Pritchert was 2-for-2 with a double.
