Arcadia Invitational

Who: Various teams from across the country, including 16 from Arizona. East Valley schools Chandler, Corona del Sol, Desert Vista, Gilbert, Hamilton, Mountain View, Queen Creek, Red Mountain, Saguaro, Tempe, Xavier and Brophy will have athletes competing.

When: Friday relays 4:30-10 p.m.; Saturday open session 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday Invitational session 4 p.m.-10 p.m. Complete schedule of events here.

Where: Arcadia High School, Arcadia, Calif.

Outlook: Brophy star sprinter/hurdler Devon Allen took this event by storm last year, winning five gold medals to earn the outstanding boys performer of the prestigious meet. Allen set Arizona state records in both the 110 hurdles (13.52 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (36.39) and won the 200-meter dash in 21.10 seconds. He had visions of improving on those times this year, but has been slowed by an ankle injury suffered during football season and aggravated in a postseason All-Star game. Allen said he plans on running the hurdles for the first time this season at Arcadia, although any chance at beating those times seems suspect as he works his way back into shape.

Chandler sprinter Ky Westbrook does have a shot at a state record. She ran the 200-meter dash in 23.64 seconds at the Chandler Rotary on March 23, within striking distance of the 23.60 mark set by Peoria’s Jessica Onyepunka in 2004. Westbrook won the 100-meter dash in 11.47 seconds at the Chandler Rotary and could also inch closer to Onyepunka’s mark in that race (11.31 seconds) with a good performance. Chandler hurdler Sherrelle Jordan will also be a main attraction after she set a meet record with a time of 13.76 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles at the Chandler Rotary. It is the third-fastest time in Arizona history, as she chases the record of 13.60 seconds set by Jacqueline Johnson in 2003.

Other standout East Valley athletes set to participate at the Arcadia Invitational include Hamilton’s Ashlee Moore (high jump, long jump), Chandler’s Makaila Flannigan (hurdles), Desert Vista’s Dani Jones (distance), Xavier’s Sarah Fakler (distance) and Red Mountain’s Aeron Carr (long jump).
