Corona del Sol, Highland winners at Doug Conley CC invite

Corona del Sol boys and Highland girls cross country teams were the big winners at the 41st edition of the Doug Conley Invitational on Saturday.

The meet, hosted by Tempe High, was held at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

Corona has won every invitational its competed in this season and this could have been the toughest so far this season.

Corona senior Nate Rodriguez won this race for the first time in his illustrious running career with a time of 15 minutes, 55 seconds, six seconds faster than teammate Marcus Wheeler, who finished second. Ryan Normand finished fourth to help the Aztecs take three of the top four spots. Blake Fischer (16th) and Patrick Cullings (33rd) rounded out the Aztecs' lineup.

Mesquite's Tyler Day (fifth) and Saguaro's Alexander Stevens (sixth) were also East Valley boys to finish in the top 10 individually.

Corona (56 points) came in well ahead of second-place Tuba City (113 points) and third-place Page (136 points).

The Highland girls team knocked off defending-champion Xavier to win the Hawks' first Doug Conley team title. Three Hawks' girls finished in the top 10: Lauren Ellsworth (second), Allyson Girad (fifth) and Addi Montgomery (tenth). Highland totaled 77 points, followed by Xavier at 93, Corona del Sol (141), Red Mountain (141) and Rio Rico (206).

Other top girls finishers were Mesquite's Alice Jensen (third), Corona's Kelly Naumann (fourth), Red Mountain's Taryn Estavillo (eighth) and Skyline's Sarah Ziemba (ninth).
