Phoenix Country Day avenged a loss to Thatcher in last year’s boys finals by whitewashing the Eagles, 5-0 in the finals of the 2A/3A team tennis championships Saturday at Phoenix Tennis Center.

Top singles player Patrick Taylor, lost to Phoenix Christian’s Andrew Reiff in last weekend’s state singles finals, beat Thatcher’s Dallin Christiansen, 6-0, 6-0 to get things rolling for PCDS.

Victories by teammates Todd Jenkins, Peter Brown, Cole Goodyear and Navdeep Khera allowed Country Day to celebrate early.

Jenkins and Brown, who won the state doubles crown together last weekend, posted 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2 wins over Brant Woods and Davis Kempton, respectively, at Nos. 2 and 3.

Goodyear beat Adam Wright, 7-5, 6-2, and Khera won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Tucson Pusch Ridge Christian seniors Jamie Shepherd and Mya Towne put an exclamation point on their high school careers Saturday, leading the Lions (19-0) to a 5-0 win over Florence for the Class 2A/3A team state championship at Phoenix Tennis Center.

Shepherd and Towne finished their prep careers with 12 state championships between them.

Florence made the state finals for the first time since 1981, playing the whole season with just five players instead of the standard six. That deficit gave Pusch Ridge an immediate 2-0 lead — one default win for singles, one for doubles — in their best-of-nine match.

So when Towne beat Serena Waardenburg 6-1, 6-0; Tanya Hetlinger beat Kayla Joovette 6-1, 6-1; and Jamie Shepherd topped Arianna Riviera 6-0, 6-2, the Gophers were done.

Florence has never won the state title.
