12/27 - Basketball roundup: Kilby sparks Thunder

Desert Vista forward Xavier Kilby scored 33 points as the Thunder overwhelmed No. 6 Desert Mountain 61-54 Friday in the first round of the McClintock Holiday Shoot-out.

Desert Vista will play Saguaro in the quarterfinals at 8:30 tonight.

"(Kilby) had a phenomenal night," Desert Vista coach Doug Harris said. "He had a lot of steals, a lot of rebounds. He was all over the place. What he brought to the table tonight was outstanding."

Kilby scored 13 of his team’s first 15 points as Desert Vista jumped out to a nine-point lead.

Desert Mountain got back to within two midway through the first half, but the Thunder had a double-digit lead by halftime.

The Wolves played most of the game without shooting guard Zach Greenberg, who had two teeth knocked out when he was hit in the mouth by

an errant elbow.

In other McClintock Holiday Shoot-out action:

CHANDLER 91, PHOENIX MOON VALLEY 80: Chandler’s Lawrence Westbrook scored 35 points and teammate Joey Shaw added 30 as the Wolves defeated the Rockets. Chandler will play Phoenix Brophy in the quarterfinals at 5:30 tonight.

SAGUARO 61, HORIZON 53: Justin Ashbaugh led all scorers with 24 points as the Sabercats downed the Huskies. Horizon was led by Rishi Kakad’s 22 points.

Saguaro will play Desert Vista in the quarterfinals at 8:30 tonight.

HAMILTON 68, MARCOS DE NIZA 67:

Roy Prieto scored 17 points to lead the Huskies (5-6) past the Padres. Kal Bay had 15 points for Marcos.

CORONA DEL SOL 62, PHOENIX ST. MARY’S 56: Dan Winterbottom led the Aztecs with 15 points and T.J. Benson added 14 as they defeated the Knights. Craig Borengasser added 13 for Corona.

MCCLINTOCK 71, PHOENIX GOLDWATER 40:Gabe Freeman had 22 points to lead the Chargers over the Bulldogs.

NORTHWEST HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 62, GLENDALE CACTUS 48: Brian Botma had 21 points as the Trojans (12-0) defeated the Cobras in a first-round game at Phoenix Greenway High School. David Mehlhorn added 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Valley Christian.

SKYLINE 67, GLENDALE IRONWOOD 59: Tyrone Araya scored 18 points and Corey Brown added 16 for the Coyotes (6-6) in a first-round win over the Eagles at Greenway. Brian Shelton had 15 points and eight rebounds for Skyline.

OTHER GAMES

DOBSON 84, HOLLYWOOD (CALIF.) 45: Kris Taylor had 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists for the Mustangs as they downed Hollywood (Calif.) in the Torrey Pines (Calif.) Shootout. Drew Thurston scored 14 points and Daniel Green added 12 for Dobson.

HIGHLAND 86, WORD OF LIFE ACADEMY (HAWAII) 38: Ty Del Re had 20 points as the Hawks trounced the Word of Life Academy in the first round of the Walter Wong Tournament at Honolulu.

Riley McCormick (17) Derek Bailey (17) and Ryan McCurdy (14) all scored in double figures for Highland (11-0).

GIRLS GAMES

DESERT MOUNTAIN 63, PHOENIX MOON VALLEY 51: Erin Greenberg had a game-high 27 points to lead the Wolves (3-9) over the Rockets in the Peoria Centennial Tournament. Desert Mountain used a 27-8 second-quarter run to take control.

GLENDALE IRONWOOD 62, DESERT MOUNTAIN 58: Lindsey Rinke scored 19 points as the Eagles defeated the Wolves (3-10) in the Peoria Centennial Tournament. Erin Greenberg led all scorers with 29 for Desert Mountain.
