Mesa Skyline senior Travis Marshall won the 5A East Valley Region cross country championship Thursday, leading the Coyotes to the team championship as well at Freestone Park in Gilbert.
Marshall covered the course in 16 minutes, 32 seconds, crossing the finish line 10 seconds ahead of Tempe Marcos de Niza junior Johnmark Farlett.
The Coyotes won with 40 points, followed by Mountain Pointe (69), Marcos de Niza (79) and Casa Grande (86).
The Coyotes had three runners finish in the top 10. Junior Isaac Trujillo came in fourth with a 16:44, one second behind third place finisher Connor Donnelly of Mountain Pointe.
EAST VALLEY REGION GIRLS
Natalie Jones, Jessey Tenioro and Kay Scaeffer finished in the top 10 as Marcos de Niza put on a strong showing and captured the Fiesta Region 5A cross country championship. The Padres (41) defeated Mountain Pointe (57), Desert Ridge (79), Westwood (99), Casa Grande (107) and Perry (126) to capture the title.
Jones (19:37) was the third, Tenioro (20:28) seventh and Schaeffer eighth.
Casa Grande junior Kylee Kieser won the meet in 18:57.
CENTRAL REGION GIRLS
Gilbert Highland freshmen Ashley Hatch and Kristi Rush carried the Hawks to the 5A Central Region title.
Highland (34) beat Corona del Sol (66), Mountain View (71) and Mesquite (94).
Hatch (18:53) placed third and Rush (19:09) was fourth. The Hawks also had two other girls finish in the top 10. Tori Haberman finished sixth in 19:35 and Danielle Bonlender was eighth in 19:44.
Mountain View’s two sophomore stars, Brianna Decker (18:38) and Sarah Schmidt (18:49) finished first and second, respectively.
FIESTA REGION GIRLS
Jessica Tonn ran an impressive 18:36 to finish first and her teammates Sarah Fakler (18:39) and Daylee Burr (18:58) finished second and third as Xavier (21) cruised past Desert Vista (39), Hamilton (88), Red Mountain (119), Chandler (125) and Mesa (158) to capture the 5A Fiesta title.
CENTRAL REGION BOYS
Senior Tyler Bingham (third), senior Ben Williams (fourth), junior Blake Cowan (sixth), junior Monson Cowley (eighth) and senior Spencer Frame (10th) all finished in the top 10 to help Mountain View capture the 5A Central Region title in Gilbert. The Toros (31) edged Corona del Sol (41), Highland (65) and Mesquite (114).
Corona’s Garrett Baker-Slama finished first in 16:02.
FIESTA REGION BOYS
Phoenix Brophy’s Will Firth (16:09), Matthew Xeureb (16:15) and Tommy Williams finished second, third and fourth, respectively, to guide the Broncos (34) past Desert Vista (39), Red Mountain (84), Chandler (103), Mesa (134) and Hamilton (145) to capture the 5A Fiesta Region title.
Desert Vista’s Tucker Kidd (16:28), Albert Kombe (16:29) and Ryan Dykstra finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
