VX Roundup 10/7: Weise leads Tempe Prep over Thatcher

Tempe Prep quarterback Max Weise broke off a 73-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the visiting Knights their first lead of the game in a 20-14 road victory over the Eagles on Thursday night.

Down 14-0 in the second quarter, Tempe Prep started its comeback when Weise hit teammate Connor Gourley with a 15-yard touchdown strike to close the gap to 14-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, running back Brandon Milek scored on a 24 yard run before Weise busted off his game-winning run that proved to be the difference.

For the game, Weise rushed for 151 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown, while passing for 55 yards and another touchdown.

The Knights pushed their record to 5-2 for the season, while Thatcher dropped to 2-3 overall.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Basha girls volleyball team gave visiting Gilbert all it could handle for five games, but in the end the Tigers pulled out a close win, 25-23, 19-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-10.

In a game that saw neither team win consecutive games, Gilbert finally pulled away in the final game to take the match.

Madison Serrano led the Bears (14-5) with 15 kills and 19 digs, doing all she could to keep Basha close until the end.

Kaitlin Meyers had three kills and an ace to help host Horizon beat St. Mary's 25-6, 25-11, 25-13, Thursday.

With the win, the Hawks improved their record to 13-6.

BOYS GOLF

Notre Dame's Austin Stadeli shot a 2-under 34 to lead the Pride to a slim 161-163 victory over visiting Desert Vista.

Brophy's Andrew MacMilian shot a 2-over 38, Thursday, good for first place as he led the Broncos (160) to a victory at Seville Golf and Country Club over Marcos de Niza (167) and host Basha (183).
