VX Roundup 1/14: Perry edges Mtn. Pointe in final seconds

Visiting Perry beat Mountain Pointe, 65-63, in a 5A East Valley region boys basketball game on Friday night.

The Pride (11-6, 3-1) trailed by 13 points at halftime but used a full-court press and came back to forge a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The final period featured several lead changes until, with six seconds left in the game, Matt Bracamonte hit one of two free throws to give the Pumas (7-10, 3-1) a two point lead and the final margin of victory. Mountain Pointe was unable to make their last shot to tie the game.

Dillon Smock led all scorers with 29 points for Perry. Tyler Wimbish led Mountain Pointe with 23 points and Jerome Garrison added 20.

In other boys hoops action, Tempe used a big third quarter to come up with a 73-54 victory over visiting Williams Field in a 4A-II East Sky region game.

The Buffaloes (13-6, 4-2) outscored Williams Field 22-6. Steve Larkin scored a game-high 30 points for the Black Hawks, but was held to four points in the third quarter.

Jordan Baker led Tempe’s second-half offensive charge by scoring 18 of his 22 points in the last two quarters. Baker also finished with eight assists, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Tempe’s big man Isaiah Haynes also had a monster performance with 19 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks.

Host and No. 1 Mountain View beat Phoenix Central, 87-71, in a 5A non-region game.

Mitch Wallace led a group of Toros in double figures with 14 points. Loren Benally, Jaren Sweeney and Kyle Bingham also scored in double figures with 12 points each. DaLan Stafford led the Bobcats with 29 points and Robert Selmon Junior added 26 points.

Girls Basketball

Host Mesquite held on to beat Basha, 59-58, in a 5A-I Central game. Candice Bomar led the Wildcats with 15 points; Nicole Carrieres added 14 points and Cecily Wilson finished with 11. The fourth quarter saw many lead changes but with 15 seconds left Carrieres scored what proved to be the winning basket on a layup off an offensive rebound. Alexis Duncan led Basha with 22 points.

In a game that saw nine players score in double figures host Chaparral beat Pinnacle 71-62 in a 5A-II Desert Valley region game.

Sydney Wiese led all scorers in the game with 21 points for the Pioneers. Casey Rarrick led Chaparral with 18 points. Jenna Savaya (16), Batabe Zempare (15), Alex Gilligan (10) and Rachel Jaworowicz (10) all also scored in double figures for Chaparral.

Aley Rohde (13), Kenna McDavis (12) and Britta Nordstrom were in double figures scoring for Pinnacle.

Boys Soccer

Victor Sanchez got his third shutout in the last four games as host Tempe beat Coronado, 2-0, in a 4A-II East Sky match. Omar Lopez and Misael Buendia scored and Hassan Mohammad added an assist for the Buffaloes.

Girls Soccer

Anya Koren scored three goals as host Desert Mountain beat St. Mary's, 8-0, in a 5A Desert Valley match. Alex Orozco and Katie Wooldridge added two goals apiece for the Wolves.
