VX State Softball Roundup 4/27: Devon Ryan's game winning hit leads Perry past Corona in 12 innings

Devon Ryan had the game winning infield hit in the top of the 12th inning as No. 17 Perry beat No. 16 Corona del Sol in the first round of the Division I state softball tournament.

The Visiting Pumas got a strong pitching performance from Jillian Leslie.

Leslie pitched all 12 innings with 11 strikeouts and gave up just six hits.

Leslie’s counterpart McKenna Isenberg was even better for the Aztecs.

Isenberg also pitched all 12 innings and had 24 strikeouts.

The Pumas will face No. 1 Glendale Mountain Ridge on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the second round.

Divsion I

No. 9 Desert Mountain 6, No. 24 Yuma Kofa 2: Andy Wellins tied the school record with 75 career victories as the Wolves came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third inning. Carlie Mills went 2-for-2 to lead Desert Mountain. The Wolves will face Horizon on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the next round.

No. 14 Chaparral 5, No. 19 Buena 1: Dallas McBride had 15 strikeouts to lead the Firebirds. Ashtyn Coleman had a triple in the fourth inning which was followed by an RBI single by Blakeley Koziol which broke a scoreless tie. From there McBride and the Firebirds were able to keep Buena at bay. Chaparral will next play No. 3 Basha on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the second round.

No. 10 Desert Ridge 8, No. 23 Highland 2: It was a team victory as the Jaguars advanced to the second round. Alyssa Sanchez went 2-for-4, Lexi Appel scored two runs, Mary Ann Kennison had a two run home run and Ashtyn Blakeman had a two run double in the sixth inning Bailey Klitzke pitched a complete game and had eight strikeouts. Desert Ridge will face No. 7 Tucson Marana on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the second round.

Other Scores: Tucson Sunnyside 7, Surprise Willow Canyon 0; Peoria Centennial 16, Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor 3; Tucson 17, Yuma Cibola 6.

Division II

No. 17 Casa Grande 6, No. 16 Queen Creek 3: Mariah Rodriquez had two runs scored while Ryland Estrada and Mariah Gallegos each had an RBI in the loss for the Bulldogs.

No. 10 Tucson Sahuaro 5, No. 23 Seton Catholic 3: The Sentinels scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning led by McKenzie Budinger’s two run double. It was not enough as Seton Catholic’s season comes to an end.

Other Scores: Buckeye Verrado 11, Phoenix Sunnyslope 1; Tucson Salpointe Catholic 12, Mohave 2; Goodyear Desert Edge 12, Tucson Cholla Magnet 2; Peoria 4, Phoenix Shadow Mountain 3; Glendale Cactus 3, Laveen Betty H. Fairfax 2; Tucson Sabino 14, Prescott 2.
