Running back Evan Tompkins rushed for 225 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries to help Pinnacle hold off Horizon, 42-28, and remain undefeated.
After the Huskies’ Spencer Marciniak hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Woods to tie the game at 28 apiece, Tompkins went to work in the fourth quarter with a 20-yard scoring run and then a 31-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Jackson Harley to put the game away in the final minutes.
Pinnacle racked up 398 yards rushing on 47 carries, but it was a Pioneers' defense that picked off Woods four times that allowed Tompkins to run away from Horizon at the end.
The Pioneers (5-0) return home to play Mountain View (Mesa) next Friday night. The Huskies (2-3) will look to get back on track against Phoenix Sunnyslope.
Brophy 45, North Canyon 7: Tyler Bruggman was 10-for-15 passing for 175 yards and three touchdowns, as he helped Brophy (5-0) score early and often in its dismantling of host North Canyon. The Broncos’ Devon Allen scored three touchdowns, his first coming on a 90-yard kickoff return to start the game. The Rattlers' lone score come in the third quarter on a 67-yard pass from Tre Grant to Kye Russell. Brophy will host Mountain Prep next Friday, while North Canyon (3-2) will host Desert Mountain.
Perry 50, Gila Ridge 14: Perry quarterback Josh Uhlorn passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Pumas. The game was knotted up at 7-7 after the first quarter before Perry (3-2) scored 29 points in the second to blow the game wide open. Perry hits the road next Friday to take on Casa Grande Vista Grande.
Queen Creek 37, Apache Junction 6: Host Queen Creek outgained Apache Junction 475 yards to 104, en route to a 37-6 victory. Bulldogs’ quarterback Carson Jones finished the game 28-40 for 314 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for another score. Queen Creek (5-0) will travel to Tucson Catalina Foothills next Friday, while Apache Junction (1-4) looks to rebound at home against Tempe.
San Tan Foothills 82, Combs 26: San Tan running back Carlos Melendez carried the ball 12 times for 347 yards and five touchdowns to push the Sabercats to a blowout win. San Tan (3-2) recorded 522 yards rushing on just 23 attempts. The Sabercats will look to keep things rolling when they travel to Valley Christian next Friday, while Combs (0-5) hosts Seton Catholic.
Coronado 19, Valley Christian 0: Baylor Cloar and Trey Huff each rushed for second-half touchdowns to help Coronado blank host-Valley Christian. The Dons defense came up huge and held the Trojans to just 79 total yards for the game. Coronado quarterback Reid Blakey tossed a 30-yard touchdown to Anthony Hantzsche in the first quarter and the Dons never looked back from there. Coronado (3-2) will take on Fountain Hills at home next Friday, while Valley Christian (1-4) hosts San Tan Foothills.
