The Deer Valley Skyhawks earned a trip to the title game of the Deer Valley High School Girls Basketball Tournament Friday by relying on their defense. With their offense sputtering, the Skyhawks missed their first five field goal attempts of the fourth quarter, the visiting Kingman Bulldogs took a 40-38 lead with 5:38 seconds left prompting a timeout by Deer Valley coach Rob Iannone. "It seemed like tonight we missed some shots that we usually wouldn't," the second year coach said after his team improved to 6-2 on the season. "Our defense overall was pretty good. We switched back and forth between our zone and man and gave them some problems." While the Bulldogs would shoot 20-of-46 from the field for the game, good for 44 percent, the Skyhawks forced them into 26 turnovers including eight in the fourth quarter. Deer Valley would knot the score at 40 with five minute remaining in the game on a Rebeca Woodberry layup off an assist feed from junior Kaci Kennett. From there the Skyhawks would take control going on a 12-2 run in just more than two minutes a stretch that allowed them to coast to a 56-46 win. Kingman point guard Lindsey Reed who had rallied her team by scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter would be held in check the rest of the game as Deer Valley earned a finals date with Xavier Saturday in a game set to start at 2:30 p.m. "We knew she was their best player so we tried to keep the ball away from her and see if their other players would make mistakes," said Kennett, who led a balanced Deer Valley offense with 13 points. "Even though they took the lead I have a lot of confidence in my team that we'll find a way to pull it out." While Kennett scored eight of her 13 in the second half backcourt mate Sam Rasmussen waited until the fourth quarter to come alive offensively scoring all seven of her points in the game's final three minutes to help Deer Valley pull away. "We don't worry about our offense so much," said the freshman. "We usually score, but I think our defense is the biggest key for us. We're all pretty quick so I think that wears down the other team, because we're always chasing them around making it tough for them." Along with eight points from junior Kelsey Collins, and five from Woodberry, who also played strong defensively, from the starters the Skyhawks got a boost off the bench as senior Kyia Brock contributed 11. "It was a pretty good team effort, but we're going to have to play much better if we're going to beat Xavier," Iannone said. "The keys for us will be to eliminate the turnovers." Rasmussen agreed. "We got by without our ?A' game tonight, but we'll need to play better tomorrow," she said. "We can't get off to such a slow start again if we want to win." In other tournament action Friday Xavier earned a chance to defend its tournament title with a 63-25 trouncing of Sunrise Mountain, while Ironwood and Cactus earned spots in the consolation championship game with wins. After falling in Thursday's opening round Ironwood defeated Horizon 57-34 Thursday while Cactus rebounded from Thursday's loss to Deer Valley with a 46-29 win over Valley Vista. The Eagles and Cobras play for the consolation title Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Sunrise Mountain will play Kingman for third place in a game set to tip at 1 p.m. Kingman 12 10 12 12= 46 Deer Valley 8 13 17 18= 56 Scoring Kingman: Kristen Gonzalez 14, Ashley Caswell 8, Lindsey Reed 8, Julie Robles 6, Cassidy Elliott 4, Sara Murphy 4, Dominique Hale 2 Field goal shooting Kingman 20-46= 44% Deer Valley 19-49= 39% Three point shooting Kingman 1-7= 14% Deer Valley 6-13= 46% Free Throws Kingman 5-8= 63% Deer Valley 12-14= 86% Turnovers Kingman= 26 Deer Valley= 15
