Time: 5 p.m. (Saturday)

Address: 1700 E. Union Hills Drive, Phoenix

Key matchup: Valley Christian must control St. Johns junior running back Shad Bride, who has rushed for a staggering 1,873 yards and 36 touchdowns, including 483 yards combined in postseason wins over Phoenix Northwest Christian and Bisbee.

Key stat: The lone common opponent between the schools is pass-oriented Northwest Christian. St. Johns prevailed, 47-20. The Redskins led by two TDs at halftime and pulled away in the second half. Valley Christian topped NWC, 27-20. The Trojans rallied in the second half after trailing by a TD at intermission.

The intrigue: Maybe the power-points weren’t quite so accurate this time. St. Johns is performing very well for a No. 10 seed, but was hurt by a poor region. Its losses (Thatcher, Show Low and Round Valley) have prepared it for postseason more than their weak North Region foes. This is a true test for Valley Christian, which was grieving when it visited Yuma Catholic in September and didn’t have head coach Bill Morgan when it was dominated by Scottsdale Christian in the Central Region title game the last week of October.
