Matt Galterio’s run-scoring double capped a four-run sixth inning Friday and helped Scottsdale Desert Mountain edge Chandler High 6-5 in Pool B play of the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Baseball Tournament at Chandler High Friday.
Skylar Helmbeck had a two-run double and Ryan Thompson a sacrifice fly to drive in the other runs in Desert Mountain’s rally. Desert Mountain (5-0) plays host to Scottsdale Horizon, the Pool A winner, today at 1 p.m. in the championship game of the tournament.
Chandler hosts Gilbert today at 1 p.m. in the third-place game.
BASEBALL
Host Horizon scored 13 runs in the first two innings in their Scottsdale Quarterback Club semifinal tournament game en route to a 13-3 win over Gilbert.
Kevin Rhoderick lead the Huskie barrage going a perfect 3-3 with a home run, a triple, and 5 RBI’s. Teammate Derrick Smigiel used his only at bat to hit a 3 run home run.
The Tigers’ Braden Hamil and Reilly Hooks each went 1-2 with a double while Michael Dibiasi took the loss.
Horizon pitcher Tim Alderson is now 2-0 on the season.
Jordan Weymouth hit a two-out, two-run walk-off home run to lift Chaparral over visiting Dobson, 5-3, in the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Invitational.
Connor Hook was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Mustangs.
Dobson will finish tournament play 1 p.m. today at Goodyear Millennium.
Mesa will host Chaparral today at 1 p.m.
Chris Cannon hit a game-tying, two-out RBI double in the seventh inning and a game-winning RBI single in the ninth to lift host Higley over Mesquite, 4-3, in the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Tournament.
Jeff Hibner went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Wildcats.
Higley will play at Highland to finish out tournament play today at 11 a.m.
Mesquite will visit Saguaro at 1 p.m.
Austin Woolridge went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Phoenix Mountain Pointe slugged three home runs to down Glendale Mountain Ridge 6-4 and earn a spot in Saturday’s Aztec Classic championship.
Philip Konieczny and C.J. Cron each added a home run for the Pride (4-1), who will conclude pool play versus Sandra Day O’Connor 9:30 a.m. today at Corona del Sol.
SOFTBALL
Sophia Spadfore’s single and Caitlin Bayley baserunning sparked a two-run rally in the sixth inning for Xavier in their 2-0 win over host St. Mary’s in a Desert Valley Region softball game. Bayley went 2-for-2 with four stolen bases for the Gators (2-2, 1-0), who got a 10-strikeout performance from Stephanie Janes.
Rachel Harbottle went 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs in Desert Mountain’s 10-0 win over Hamilton (4-2-1) in a five-inning mercy rule non-region game.
Nicole Rowe also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Wolves (7-2).
Host Dobson defeated Tucson Flowing Wells 4-1 behind a 10 strikeout, two-hit performance by pitcher Katherine Hulet (2-2).
Krista Hicks went 2-3 with a double, a triple and two RBI’s for the Mustangs.
Chelsea Harbin went 4-for-4, hit two doubles and drove in five runs as Mesquite cruised by host Westwood, 17-0 in five innings due to the mercy rule, in 5A non-region action.
Lexy Townsend tallied 10 strikeouts for the Wildcats (7-2), improving to 3-0 on the season.
Alex Bejarano went a combined 6-for-8 with an RBI in two Chandler wins in the Canyon del Oro Tournament at Tucson Sports Park.
The Wolves (6-4) downed Marana Mountain View 7-3 and beat Rincon 5-1.
Lacy Goodman hit a home run to lead off Red Mountain’s 8-0 non-region win over host Gilbert Highland.
Goodman added a single and a double to go 3-for-4 with two RBIs the Mountain Lions (6-1-1).
