Staked to an eight-point lead after three quarters, the wheels came off on the No. 7-seeded Huskies (21-8) in a 42-41 home loss to No. 23 Glendale Mountain Ridge in the second round of the Division I boys basketball state tournament on Saturday night.
A 16-7 advantage for Mountain Ridge in the fourth erased a 34-26 Huskies lead, a lead built largely on a 16-5 advantage in the second quarter.
Mountain Ridge won its second consecutive road game in this tournament, having beaten Mountain View in the first round.
Mountain Ridge will face No. 2 Laveen Cesar Chavez on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Division II
No. 4 Paradise Valley 60, No. 13 Cholla 28: Paul Watson scored 20 points as the No. 4-seeded Trojans moved on with ease into the quarterfinals. Ryan Finley added eight points, and both Cedric JacobsJones and Brandon Williams contributed six points for P.V. (23-7), which will face No. 12 Desert Edge in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Jobing.com Arena.
Division III girls
No. 23 Gilbert Christian 40, No. 7 Valley Christian 38: Colleen Young scored 12 pts, Rebecca Fritts had eight points and 13 rebounds and Cassidy Curtner added eight points and five rebounds as Gilbert Christian stifled Valley Christian with defense to pull out the upset at NAU on Saturday. Gilbert Christian will face No. 2 Valley (Sanders) in the quarterfinals on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
